A popular primary school's principal (not SAP school) once told me that students who do well in MT will usually do well in the other subjects. I guess if the child has the perseverance to \"conquer\" MT, that child is likely to \"conquer\" all the other subjects. 🙂

Guess it didn't apply to me. Chinese was my only A* in PSLE and my only distinction in O levels. 😓

Though my niece scored A* for Chinese, A for Maths and English, B for Science. Her score is 243.
My neighbour's ds scored A* for Maths, A for English and Science and B for Chinese. His score is only in the high 220s.

So better to put all resources in Chinese to score well for PSLE

Because the standard deviation for CL is bigger than that of math or science. Part of the problem with the T score formula and purely because PSLE is a placement aka ranking exam, and testing the knowledge learnt is only a mean to an end

There should be a freedom of choice when it comes to education. If MT or is forced upon our DC when some of them do not have a flair for it, then learning it becomes a punishment. The effects are counter productive…it makes some of them more resolved to avoid the use of the language.

As in the case of PSLE, unlike the ‘o’ levels, the MT score must be included to compute the t-score. If a child is poor in MT, they will naturally be at a disadvantageous position when T score is calculated.
One solution would be to choose the best of 3 subjects. If a child is good at MT, let him or her use it as part of their total score. If the child is poor at MT, don’t penalize them further by lowering their T-score. They are miserable as it is being forced to swallow a subject where they put most effort in and the return is low. Without the stress of ensuring a good score in MT, learning the language would be more enjoyable.

The banana would still have to learn the language…but in a less stressful atmosphere… The score is optional.

Talk and discuss so much and the result is still like that.

You can cry and moan as much as you like until the Cow comes home, but the T-score will soon be abolish as mention by our prime minister. Hence, all psle will be gauge just like O level. Whether you dun like it or not, it’s here to stay. Either you accept it or ship out. That’s the life in Singapore.

The mother tongue issue is same across all ethinicity.

Being tamil, I would say I have heard my friends gripe about our kids lack on interest in Tamil. Hey but they still watch tamil movies ;).

Resource availability is another concern. Its not easy to get past year papers for Tamil. Even assessment books are way lesser compared to what is available for Chinese.

It could be because Tamil are minority here.
Not sure about Malay and the resources available to support it.

My daughter opted for chinese at P1, so we are making use of the ready resources at popular and past year papers.
Its a tough language. But if kids have a passion for reading and a curiosity to check the meaning of any new word they read, they should do fine..

When I grew up, I learned Hindi (not Tamil) and my parents could not support me in that front. But I still topped the class. Reason being I loved to read and was curious. Plus was scared that I will loose against the rest whose parents can support them. So worked double hard..

My DD likes chinese (not to the extent that she is crazy)..just likes it better than tamil. She is ok with it. She does complain about the compo..compre part.. rest seems to be ok.

But we communicate in tamil (my mother tongue) at home (so kiddos speak it well), and We taught basic tamil to my daughter so she can read.

Hope the future generation do not loose interest in MT of their choice and continue to support its existence into the years to come 🙂 or else many languages will become extinct..except english which we all seem to embrace
For your information, people who have taken Hindi as MT has got lower T-score than Tamil. Child has got A* in other subjects except Hindi which is A. For Hindi we don't get any past papers . We are at the mercy of DAV and Hindi society . They will charge you 90$ every month but some teachers are hopeless. Even in Delhi we don't have such a high standard of Hindi. If somebody from MOE reading this, hope you can look into it.

Hahaha yup forgot to mention Hindi along with tamil…Hindi also don’t have resources. I totally agree…here…

I have not seen any Hindi assessment or text book in popular or other bookshops…

If a language is offered at MOE school, the respective resources must be made available to public

My daughter scored band 1 for all subjects except for MT. While the option proposed by bekithia appeared attractive, the thought of removing MT (so that my dd can enter the best sec school) never cross my mind simply because we are 华人。Instead I plan to help my dd improve her standard of Chinese for her new school year.

Seriously speaking, by removing MT, the likely outcome is that time and effort will be diverted to the remaining 3 subjects and not even bother to start, not to mention about appreciating the beauty of Chinese later in life. As an analogy, if French or Spanish is not a PSLE subject, how many students will spend the energy to study them?

It may be extreme, but look at how PRCs pick up English, literally reading the dictionary from cover to cover. Not easy for them to pick up English.

As an alternative, instead of removing MT from PSLE, why not consider removing English? What do you think will happen overnight? It won't be surprising to see our Chinese standard improve by leaps and bounds overnight.

Strange that only Singapore Chinese have problems with MT, never hear Malays or Tamils complain about their MT.

I agree. I too have noticed that other races hardly complain & some even take Chinese. We are 华人.....

You can look like a 华人 but it doesn't mean you can utter a single word of 华语 using your mother's tongue. I think the call for removal of MT scoring is firstly comparing t score between different MT is not apple to apple, and secondly some people's mother's tongue MT is their father's tongue FT first language. If MT is FT then their MT score will be higher which gives them an advantage at PSLE. So don't count MT might level the playing field. But with the complete removal of t scores, no such problems anymore. 🆒

The English, math, n science standards are much lower there.
