      p.s.

I love this forum very much and have read almost all the two hundred pages within 3 days. Once I log on, I become addicted..... 💋

The \"big yellow envelope\" episode is especially dramatic. However, I had mixed feeling afterwards:
      1) I felt it is fun, informative....
      2) I was touched by the love of all the Kiasuparents, especially Kiasimom's \"养儿一百年, 长忧九十九......\" (kind of miss Kiasimom.... 🙏 )
      3) skeptical/confused about GEP.
      * perhaps \"giftedness\" the word itself is a bit misleading.
      * how many truly exceptional gifted ppl are there? perhaps 1 out of 100,000 ? So all the GEPers (1%) are only marginally or moderately gifted, right? So what is the difference between a marginally/moderately gifted and highly abitlity?
      * If my little darlings were exceptional gifted, I would worry more than if they are what they are now, happy, care-free, stress-free.....
There are many exceptional gifted children grow up to become very weired persons with pretty low EQ. Perhaps their low EQ have been compensated by high IQ...
      4) I felt sad some bright kids broke down when not accepted into GEP. Thus I hope our parents do not set expectations too high and avoid discussing too much about GEP with children.
      5) We still can use the books ( as recommended by CoffeeCat ) to train the brain of our kids. But our purpose is definitely not GEP. Even they remain in mainstream, we still have a way to help them to unleash their potentials because i believe: 脑子越动越活

        HyperKiasu:
IMHO, they can survive because there is demand. Just as plastical surgery, if look can be artificially enhanced, why not brain?

What HyperKiasu said hit the nail on its head:
Dr Peh survives cos' there is a demand; though I would add that Dr. Peh covers more than just GEP training to survive.
Do u know that Dr. Peh has pre-requisites b4 they accept your kid into the GEP training?
If they are so cxxx-sure, why the need for these pre-requisites?

MOE does not encourage preparation for GEP.
The msg is clear from its stance.

So what if you practice your child to qualify for GEP?
Are u going to hand-hold your kid henceforth?
        Let it be: if your kid has it, cheers to u;
if not; GEP is not a big deal; there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Did u see the top scorers' for this year's A levels?
GEPers did not top the cohort!
Is this another cause for concern?

          GEP is not everything

GEPers’ promotion to Sec 1 is also dependent on their attitude … so watch it there

spoke with some sec sch principal recently - also some concerns of the GEPers attitude in sec sch - even in IP school, there is no guarantee they will perform - it is all attitude issue

if a kid has been hot housed to make it into GEP, can she/he cope with the rigour of the programme ?

              absolutely.

GEP is nothing, nothing but an experiment with smaller size of class and earlier exposure to higher level of study.

              Does GEP really matter?
P4-P6 only 3 yrs. the 3 yrs’ disparity will be levelled off very fast along the way…

So if GEPers succeed in Sec. Uni or future career, is it becoz of GEP program that helps?
These GEPers can do equally well if our system has mainstream only.

a PRC friend was shocked to know this GEP. in china, no PSLE already yrs back. MOE so old fashioned and cruel enough to torture kids two rounds at the age of 9 (P3) & 11 (P6)…

In some sec schools , the former GEPers are grouped togather again to do more challenging courses. Do watch what you do now by squeezing your kids into GEP ! Do you want them to continue suffering even in sec school?

Actually there is no need to think about how different a gifted kid is from the rest, its just a label based on tests. It’s just our moe way to allocate resources to develop a differentiated curriculum for "better" kids. No matter what, having a gep system (no matter how unjustified) still looks better than not having right, else the moe will be accused of not allocating resources to develop talents.

It isn’t really surprising if gep don’t top the cohorts. Their school environment mostly focus on enrichment & individual strengths, they don’t really care about being the top top (numbers wise its very hard and not worth the trouble, is there truly any drastic privilege given to the top score and someone with 1 less distinction in life?).

About china, anyone watched the news yesterday night? 400 parents vie to get a place in a prestigious kindergarten ("ming xiao"). Talk about kiasuparents, they exist in usa and china too!

                      To hyperkiasu:
                      I think i am neither a kid nor a parent…I am gonna be 21 soon…
IQ books are always useful for the kids, besides the useful brain workout they provide, sometimes in life they will have to take reasoning tests like during dsa, scholarship, job opportunities, etc

                      The vocabulary should be tough.

Actually, anyone from any category has a chance of being weird person with low eq. I am quite sometimes you will met people you think with low eq and they are not gifted nor exceptionally gifted. It’s just that the size of the "gifted" or "exceptionally gifted" group is smaller (so makes the statistics look larger) and well they are just being more and easily targeted by the media. Most gifted children grow up very normally like everyone else, so there’s no need to worry if your kid is labelled gifted.

                        5) A and B started at the same point and walked in opposite direction. For every 20 m A walked, B walked 12 m. If A walked 1 km, what was the total distance between them?

                        Ans: 1600 m
Thought the selection test suppose to be confidential to ensure fairness or accurracy of the selection result? How could the questions be made know and used to make money? GEP branch don't bother :? :?
