After going through PSLE with dd1, it dawned on me that preparation should start fr p1. Thus, thumbs up for sembgal for creating this thread!

Actually P1 results are not important at all as there is no streaming. However, a lot of P1 parents are frantic and worry that their children cannot cope in P1. If the child relies on the parents too much in P1, no doubt the child can score for exams, it may result in an over-confident child at the next level P2. Too much handholding is not a good idea as children should be answerable for the homework that they have to do. In fact, P1 is not the time to worry too much about academic but to focus on working with the child on time management, organization skills, being responsible and showing resilience, having self-confidence and able to manage his/her own social and emotional skills. Being able to socialise and communicate is more important than focusing on academic skills in P1.

In P2, the results do determine which class the child goes to. Parents can push their children all the way to P6, but what happens after that when the child move on to Sec 1? If the child never learns how to WANT to achieve with a great drive, the child will just be a stationery bicycle, waiting for that push all the time. Instilling an internal drive within the child is better as the child takes initiative and responsibility for his/her learning.

Therefore, it is better to let a child experience failure earlier in life so that the child will want to work hard. A child who gains too much success in early life will be too complacent and over-confident.

These are just my thoughts. Wonder what are yours?
