Our prelims are actually at low standard and I scored 276 for it, then at PSLE, I flunked the maths paper and I got 259.Oh really? I did hear normally the papers at Prelim are at the higher standard. This is to train the children and let them know that papers are not always a breeze.
I chanced upon this book from Popular - Approaching English through News by Diana Tham. The level is for Sec 1 but the news in there specially written to encourage children's interest in newspaper articles. They are quite refreshing, educational and interesting. This book motivates children to think critically and creatively. I have my daughter picks a newspaper article that she likes to read and then we attempt the questions and exercises together in line with the article. Personally, I find it's a good book to invest.

How can one flunk math and get such a high score? What was the math grade if you dont mind me asking?
Whats the formula to calculate aggregate esp the T-score? -

Erm, the way the message was phrased sounded like the math paper was flunked at PSLE- when a student gets only one chance ;> -
remember the T-score is calculated from comparing your raw score with the average raw score of the cohort. So he could have flunked his raw score but gotten a decent T-score.

True that T-score is reflective of the cohort performance. But 259 is pretty high. I suppose that the other subjects must have high grades too.
I suppose you all know tht an U-grade means immediate repeat of PSLE in EM3 the following year. but i now wonder if an unusually high aggregate can be a saving grace -

Whoa! :? Nowadays students also have such high expectations that a (more than) decent score like 259 is said to be flunking! :shock:
Through all discussions with other parents, I realise that yes good (or fantastic) grades do open doors to better schools and more opportunities, but honestly in the future- is your employer or career path determined by such difference in the psle scores?? :roll:
i simply find this eternal debate one without a satisfactory answer. -

My dotty is one of those push herself too hard type, since kindergarten. I'm worried that she is wilting under pressure. Her math teacher says she is a bit with drwawn in class compared to P5 (same teacher). she did not do to her usual level in the tests (test 1 and ca1) . Feel her confidance level is dipping...

one thing is she is sleeping late, even after she is in bed she takes time to fall asleep. Trying to get her to go to bed b4 10, let the home work be damned
Na - i am not the typical kiasu mom, no caning, no pressure as to how much she should score, why she did this wrong, etc . But maybe unconciously i am putting a pressure, expectation?? :stupid:
Not sure to envy you or not. My neighbour also told me before that her girl would push herself to the limit when it comes to results and would turn emo if her result is not up to her own expectation. I've so often hear that girls would push herself to achieve academic results, but I've not hear the same about boys. -

Perhaps girls subject themselves more to peer pressure even if parents do not push?
Typically kids who push themselves very hard are in a class of competitive kids or they have been doing well consistently so they feel the compelling need to maintain for fear of being laughed at or \"verbally abused\" by friends.
My kid does not push herself very hard because she is not in an academically competitive class. They are competitive in other things, like wanting to win inter-class contest or inter-group contest but academically so far, not so evident in hard core competition unlike some classes. The main motivation is to keep up with herself and avoid being given snide remarks by unfriendly classmates.
