It taught DS how to draw a circle using a compass, using Protractor, a sense of angles and lot of circle concepts besides the cutting and painting And most importantly planning - how best to use the circles to get a variety of slices aka optimization.

That's an interesting suggestion. Unfortunately, both my work and my ds' studies meant that I've to pay to buy time.
