Or perhaps boys are more 'thick-skin' to mockery/snide remarks? 😉

he said flunked means at his own standard lar...instead of 276 he got 259....probably still A* for math but not the good A*

Whoa! :? Nowadays students also have such high expectations that a (more than) decent score like 259 is said to be flunking!

Through all discussions with other parents, I realise that yes good (or fantastic) grades do open doors to better schools and more opportunities, but honestly in the future- is your employer or career path determined by such difference in the psle scores??

i simply find this eternal debate one without a satisfactory answer.

Lol, there is nothing to debate, it is simply a matter of choice. There are many ways to success, a portion of the population prefer to take the route through good academic grades.

but not an easy choice to make right... esp when we dont have a crystal ball to foresee the future!

Perhaps girls subject themselves more to peer pressure even if parents do not push?

Typically kids who push themselves very hard are in a class of competitive kids or they have been doing well consistently so they feel the compelling need to maintain for fear of being laughed at or \"verbally abused\" by friends.

My kid does not push herself very hard because she is not in an academically competitive class. They are competitive in other things, like wanting to win inter-class contest or inter-group contest but academically so far, not so evident in hard core competition unlike some classes. The main motivation is to keep up with herself and avoid being given snide remarks by unfriendly classmates.
Its good to be competitive. i think ur kid got the spirit right.

Imho, its great if you push urself because you want to do better, not because you couldnt. The first is about challenging urself, the second about tying ur self worth to what you get. I fear my dotty puts herself into the second category. she has been among the top few since p1, hence the need to \"maintain\" it i guess.

Seriously, PSLE scores are just the first milestone - at the max it gets u into a good sec school. Its not really a make or break thing. Talking to my dotty about this, dunno how much is sinking in ...

True. PSLE is just a first of the many and much bigger mountains our children have to climb so i tell myself not to make a mountain out of a molehill... cos they need stamina to overcome bigger obstacles in sec schools and beyond.
Our prelims are actually at low standard and I scored 276 for it, then at PSLE, I flunked the maths paper and I got 259.

How can one flunk math and get such a high score? What was the math grade if you dont mind me asking?

Whats the formula to calculate aggregate esp the T-score?
I got A.

What I meant was I was trying so hard to get into RI, and that day, I received such a score. I was 0.something off from RI.

hope you are happy at whichever school u managed to get in- RI or otherwise. More importantly i hope u realise its not the end of the world when one does not get into the desired course/ school. Obviously you are a bright student with much ahead of you!

Parents be careful ... let's not put too much pressure on our kids ... RI is not for all but the elite. As parents, we should ensure that our kids get the best possible shot at PSLE ... and we should help them to prepare well.

My girl will be doing PSLE this year ... I understand from teachers that the school will go full steam ahead with numerous practice papers in Semester 2 ... meantime my girl has been sourcing for learning opportunities beyond the classroom ... there are numerous websites out there that we have found useful in giving the added exposure ...

                        http://www.oldschool.com.sg/
                        http://p6.learninghub.sg
                        http://www.misskoh.com/

Bottom line is that our kids need added exposure to PSLE type questions which can be found in abundance at these websites! ...
