Hi, what about I genuinely own the unit near the school and leave it empty/weekend house but we stay in another house further away?

      Is that allowed?
I think u will need to make it look like u are living there somehow. Not an empty house or with tenants. But if further away, your kids need to wake up earlier right? The point of home school distance priority is so that the kids can be closer to school. U should at least try to stay there.

Are we allowed to buy or rent a property near the school but leave it empty and don't live there 100% of the time?

If u bought it, and have your belongings there, there's nothing they can do.

But if u rented it, this is where u will be caught. U need to stay in the rental unit for 30 months.

Can you clarify what do you mean by \"stay\" in the unit? Do you mean must eat, sleep, defecate, etc in there?

What if I rent for 30 months but choose not to stay there? Or only stay there during weekdays but empty during weekend?

In my case, \"There\" means within 1 km. \"Further\" means within 2 km. We own and live in a landed property within 2 km, also own a condo within 1 km. If we continue living in the landed property, and terminate our condo tenant's lease and leave it empty for at least 30 months after the registration of primary school, can that work?

Similarly, can we rent a condo within 1 km of school and only dorp by after school or use the condo unit sporadically while still living in our landed house that is within 2 km?

These locations in question are all within the Bukit Timah and Dunearn stretch. So a distance of 2 km passes by quickly in a moving car, if you are familiar with the traffic there at non-peak hours. A difference of 1 km in distance is almost negligible.

Again, please get your facts right. The most recent case was about a man who used his uncle's investment property address to register for his daughter. He did not rent it and the whole the family didn't stay in it. Even the newspaper reported it as a case of fake address!

The median household monthly income for Singapore in year 2014 was reported to be $8207, which worked out to an annual median household income of around $100k a year. The average household income is even higher.

I reiterate the point that to fork out $36K is within reach for the median households, whereas $150K is out of reach.

Beside closing the off the loophole for rental properties, MOE should also look into the use of fake addresses. Parents have been known to use their siblings, relatives, and friends addresses for registration without staying in the unit for a single day. This is another loophole that should be closed or penalized.

I think you do not understand what fake address means. Fake address means it doesn't exist. The property doesn't exist. In this case, there is a genuine property. It is a case of providing false information. It's false address, not fake address.

U didn't say median. U said most. When you say most, it means more than 80%. I also wish to reiterate that you mentioned poor. That these pp who could afford $36k rentals but not the $150k are poor.

You are being pedantic. The terms \"fake address\" and \"false address\" have been used interchangeably and by and large, it is understood. Even Straits Times uses the terms at will and you should bring this to their attention![/quote]You are clearly mistaken. Take a look at what Straits Times wrote. It's always false information and false address. You need to learn to accept correction. If not, how are you going to teach your daughter? Please make sure she understands the difference between false and fake. If she used it wrongly, it will cost her marks. But well, it depends on how stubborn you are. If u insist you are correct, by all means teach that to your daughter that they can be used interchangeably. That's all I will say. I'm just doing this out of goodwill. If you can't accept it, I'm fine by it.

You can always try... someone I know rented out their condo but STILL USED the condo address they rented out to apply for the famous school at Bukit Timah and got in! The school found out about it but still let the girl study in the school... So you better have a damn good reason on hand for the school to buy the reason...

Whether u stay there 24/7 or once a week, they can't check and can't enforce.

It is regrettable that you are getting personal over a use of words that Singaporeans can generally understand. I am ready to be corrected but why drag my daughter into the picture? Would you like it when I talk about your son?

For those who signed rental lease of 1 year will now be trapped, especially if the condo is in prime district.

Super rich won't face this problem because

                    1) they would usually be staying near the school
                    2) can afford.
for those (not super-rich) who plan to escape after 1 year lease is up : do not intend to continue renting anymore to fulfill 30 months compliance, if they are found out or caught, with this new ruling implemented, wonder what consequences await them, besides their kid get transferred out by MOE ?

Indeed regrettable. What started out as a correction of what a fake address meant became a \"get your facts straight\" because you didn't understand it as a correction. I'm sorry i said your daughter. As parents, we are also constantly learning. If we are unable to have a humble heart and learn from our mistakes, we can't teach our children. It's nothing personal really. I just hope that you know the difference and able to accept that these two words are different. It may be ok in normal conversation, but it isn't alright in writing.

                      Similarly, 'median' isn't 'most'.

Most of all, I hope as parents, we display some form of integrity. This is a value that we need to pass to our children. If we can't do it, how do we tell our children that they should not tell lies and do what is right?

hi all, it is a little confusing with the new rule. Does it means if my kid is going to be registered this year and i bought my new house this year hoping to go for the <1km priority i cannot do this now or does it means i just have to stay in the new place for at least 30 months after the registration?
