10 Tricky Yaya Problems and How to Deal

Yaya is a big help in the house, but what do you do when her attitude or situation gets in the way?
10 Tricky Yaya Problems and How to Deal
Most of us who have the privilege of hiring helpers or yayas know that having an extra hand often brings a burden along with the blessings. We’ve heard, or even experienced ourselves, many a yaya “horror story.” Still, we owe a lot to them, so we must be careful with how we deal with them.
[/quote]I agree that the 10 strategies will help in most normal circumstances especially when attitude issue is not a persistent / prevalent problem.

Employers should not think that we OWE MAIDS A LIVING. We really DO NOT owe anyone a living. Singapore DOES NOT OWE US A LIVING TOO. Nothing is free. FDW do not come Free. They are paid, housed and fed for free. Granted, we employers should treat our workers fairly and equitably; apart from this, we really do not need to be counsellors as well. Back in their homeland, they earn a pittance for a month's work. Here, maids are paid at least SGD450 equivalent to a highly educated professional's pay in their own country.

We get in these people to help us, not for us to babysit them. Yet in many instances, many employers have gone out of their way to be kind, giving opportunities, chances etc to these people. Yet how many of them had reciprocated in equal measures: in terms of loyalty, and servitude.

I really must say that the current situation with FDW is in part due to the hard work of NGOs tending to over-exaggerate or over-emphasize certain situations thus tipping the scale so it becomes an unequal playing field. When it becomes widespread perception that maids are mistreated, abused, bullied, etc...suddenly you will get a deluge of complaints ranging from genuine to perceived hurts. Even good ones may seek once in a while to \"get back\" at somebody for 'hurting my feelings'. They have a lot of support more than employers, contrary to what people might think.

It is very well for people to judge, make speeches, make recommendations, but at the end of the day, it is not an easy situation to be in : employer and maid. It requires good behaviour on both sides. It requires integrity on both sides. It requires patience and tolerance on both sides.

While there are mean employers seeking to take advantage of their maids, we have an equal if not more numbers of maids these days seeking to take advantage of their employers or try to wriggle out of a contract. We all know, who can play this game better now.

At the end of the day, i have this to say: We are dealing with humans. Kindness, care and concern cannot satisfy everyone. not many of us have the time, the positive energy left at the end of a shitty day at work, to deal with maids' emo outbursts and grouses on top of having to deal with our children's problems and schoolwork. We as employees ourselves need to be careful with our attitudes, watch our words and actions on top of having to exude positive energy at work. No one owes us anything. We get talked down too.

I can see why people are happier without their maids. We can finally be ourselves.

After reading the unhappiness of employment maids. Luckily my first maid from http://www.besthelper.com.sg which is an Indonesian didn't give me the bad experience. I'm consider lucky to get a good maid at my first try. So far after 1yr 6mths my maid is still quite hard working especially for infant care. But unfortunately she going back on next June as she not going in to recontract. Definitely will go back to the agent for new maids.

It's not easy to find a maid who has initiative. I used to have certain expectations of my maid but after a few changes of maid, I just expect to have a decent maid who can help out with basic household chores. Not expecting any form of initiatives at all.

Yes Yes! Totally agree! Haiyo... Nowadays good maids who has initiative is really hard to find.. Had to keep changing maids. Sometimes is the agency though, some agency keep promoting their maids like very good but when come, all talk only...

BTW, Good Luck in finding a good maid!

            Hi all,

My SIL's maid was crying to her today asking to go home because her hubby is vomiting blood /lung infection etc.. she only worked 1 month less 2 days!

Just want to ask, if she brings the maid to agency --will she get the remainder of the maid loan back? 😞

Had domestic helpers for a few years when kids were small. It’s really a matter of luck to get someone who can match with our temperament. We used to have one whom we thought was good and hardworking, only to discover she stole money from us, and we sent her back. But a few months later, she called from Philippines and next we knew she was on plane. We reckoned if we keep our money and valuables well, she would not be tempted. Eventually we’ve to let her go again becos of her bad habit again. We are on our own since 3+ years. It’s not easy to do the housework but we get by using weekend helper to do the menial work eg wash toilet, wipe the windows, etc. Kids still get well pressed uniforms (the mother insisted on doing the ironing for her kids) and daily change of uniforms, etc. But floor be mopped twice a week and not daily now, eat out (and tried tengkah before can’t din work out), and teaching the kids to clean up after themselves etc. All in all, I guess, we are happier without a live-in domestic helper as the privacy is very much welcome though at times, we wish the house can be cleaner.

Snip Avenue near Parkway or any neighbourhood hairdresser.

I bear the cost of everything for them. This includes hand cream, Robert, phone cards, toiletries etc.

Anyone provides gloves to your helper? I prefer her to wear gloves than using hand cream. I offered her gloves but she doesn’t want. I feel like making it compulsory for her to wear. What do you think?

Wah, your maid so atas, still must use handcream? If it messes my stuff, I’ll ask her to wear gloves when working too. Why use handcream when working? Can use at night instead.
