2017 P1 Registration Exercise for 2018 In-Take

I have a girl born in 2012 (dragon girl), already feeling anxious…
i have the option to put her in my alma mater which is like the 3rd popular school (based on number of applicants) or i can do pv in the #1 school (based on number of applicants) to be in phase 2b (within 1km).
So many things to worry, like wat if still need to ballot in phase 2b although past years all balloting in phase 2b are for more than 2km. Then worry dunno my daughter can take the stress mah if its a more popular school (more remedials etc). -

Please don't overstress yourself, you have time on your side unlike those who are 2015 thread.
I will leave your ranking by popularity aside.
1. You have a choice under 2A (your old school or we can call it school A),
2. If you actually prefer another school (school B) and do not mind doing PV to get into the school B, you can apply for PV and assume you got accepted (we are taking out the equation on whether the school accept the application)
3. In the year of registration, say you apply under 2A for school A and got in, you can always apply only for School B when you are sure there is no balloting needed for you within 1km (chances are that it should not have balloting as you mentioned its only for >2km).
You also have ample time to find out if the culture of school B and the amount of workload and attend open house, if any. At the same time, you should know better of School A since you are from the school.
Being parents, we tend to worry too much about our children's future. -

Would like to join if its a active community member however the school we are aiming for does not fall under the GRC but falls under 1-2KM does it mean that we will have to apply under phrase 2C instead of 2b?

Note that they had tweaked the rules a bit for kids registering in 2016 and later.
1. Parents have to be grassroots leaders for at least 2 years (last time 1 year).
2. They will get priority only in schools in the constituencies where they live (not where they choose to serve and where they live).
My prior understanding is that schools must fall under the GRC where they serve but the above (taken from Asiaone) seems to differ a bit. Parents who wish to use this route pls check directly with the GR - they know why parents come to volunteer, no big secret.

Thanks! Then it will be diffcult for us as the school we are aiming for near us does not fall under the same GRC. Hence meaning we are not able to fall under phrase 2b when we register? As our place is new we just shifted in last year. Will the GRC has the list of primary school ?[/quote]

Hi . Would you take an almost guaranteed chance at a relatively popular neighbourhood school within 1 km under phase 2B or go for branded schools a distance away under phase 2C?
I have a rough idea which is better but didn’t want to regret not trying for the best for my girl . -

Hi everyone! Great to find fellow parents here registering for P1 in the same year. I’m currently looking around to see which school is good for my boy.

Living in Sembawang
Ideal will be P2B for St Andrew Jr and easier for my son to be at my parents’ place (but still >2km from registered address)
But if not possible, then just P2A at Bendemeer Pri, which is a normal neighborhood school and near to my parents’ place.
Prob won’t be able to put him at the schools near my house as we’re working parents and reach home a 8 plus daily.
Can I ask - what do you all look for when considering which Pri sch to send your child to? -

(else Sch bus fees ex, if stay far eg more than 10 km)
Standard of the school, overall psle performance, how is it so far ?
Check School website for info, or call up school to find out.
If you are an alumni member, ask fellow alumni members around, those with kids already studying inside the school.
If you are a Parent Volunteer, or join Parents support group, your foot already stepped inside the school ground, making it much easier for you, to glean insight info, which outsiders cannot obtain easily.
Standard of Chinese taught, inside the School ?
When does the school offer Higher Chinese, at which level ?
Start HCL from Primary 1, or start from Primary 4 onwards ?
Why need to know this ?
Because the through train IP Secondary 1 cohort schools, direct express to GCE A level (bypass O level) : require Higher Chinese, from Sec 1 onwards
Any character building program taught, inside the school ?
What does it entail ?
identify what moral core values are the school, trying to impart to pupils ?
How does the school teach English and Chinese composition, in P1 and P2 ?
from your observation, do you think is it effective in teaching composition, to lower primary students, or not really ?
you can stand at the school gate entrance during school dismissal : make friends and talk to the parents standing there daily, waiting to pick up their child, find out from them, how the school teach compo.
Because some schools are stronger in teaching English compo, while other schools are stronger in teaching Chinese compo, yet other schools are weak in both.
How are the teachers like, inside the school ?
how about the Principal ?
The children mix (are there a lot from international community, or there are more local kids inside the school ?
Some parents prefer kid to attend SAP schools, avoid those schools that have a very high percentage of kids from international community.
Any atas, status conscious snobbish parents inside the school, or parents come from all walk of life, generally are humble ?
does the school always ask kids, to raise funds ?
The range of CCA offered, anything interesting for your kid ?
Any CCA that next time your child can use for dsa, possibly ?

Students can join choir, to dsa into SCGS Secondary
Does the school offer ICAS tests, Maths Olympaid tests at mid to Upper primary ?
Some schools don't even bother to arrange these tests.
How about the academic pace taught ?
If my child only average or happen to be a slow learner, is the school suitable, for 6 long years ahead ?
Any notorious bullying event or incident that happen before, reported so far, in this school ?
Be it verbal bullying, or physical fight bullying ?
Have you walked into the school canteen before, observe how is the behavior of the students there, overall ?
any fighting, sneering, argument, fighting going on, during recess time ?
Have you ever walked in, check how is the condition of the student care centre, like ?
your kid going to spend many hours there daily, from 2.30 pm until 7 pm.
(assuming most schools already turn single session)
Everyday, many hours spent inside there, the peers' behavior bound to influence your kid, one way or another.
Do the students at student care centre often play computer games, play handphone, play IPad, watch too much TV get addicted, pick up bad speaking vulgar, crude language, cursing & swearing words, from other kids, staying inside the same student care centre ?
Every school is unique, different
