      Dear parents and students,

Kindly allow me to share the following:

      (a) A student scored below 170 T-score during Prelim Exams and scored 199 T-score for her PSLE (2014). After discussion with her, her mum decided to enrol her in NA at a neighbourhood school with COP (Express) 202 and COP (NA) 168 (she would qualify to get a place (NA) at Anderson Secondary School and Bukit Panjang Government High School).

Her mum made such choice as she wanted to boost self-confidence level of her daughter. She knew that her daughter didn’t score well during PSLE as lack in self-confidence and she was worried also her daughter might be demoralized further if she would continue with poor results [COPs (NA) at Anderson Secondary School and Bukit Panjang Government High School were about 188 and 191].

During S1 this year, she scores above 70% - scores A1 and A2 for all subjects and receives good comments from all teachers in-charge (she will be promoted to Express during S2).

      (b) A student scored 265 T-score during PSLE (2014). He enrols in IP but he doesn’t do well as he adapts a complacent attitude towards his studies.

During Y1 this year, he fails few subjects and he may be demoted to Express if he continues with poor results in Y2.

From the above, we may notice that positive attitude plays an important role.

Each year after PSLE, we may see a lot of parents and students are in dilemma about how to choose school/NA at high COP (Express) school or Express at low COP (Express) school/O level or IP. Before each decision making, we should take into consideration: (1) is the student self-motivated, self-directed and able to handle stress well? If so, he/she will be suitable for IP (2) If one scores between T-score 188 and 199, (a) it’s advisable to find out/understand the actual reason that the student to obtain such T-score - is it due to lack in self-confidence? If so, this student may be demoralized further if he/she has to study at very competitive environment and continue to get poor results (it’s not easy to be promoted to Express during S2 as all subjects are to score above 70%/75% and must receive good comments from all teachers in-charge)(b) whether he/she is able to accept to be enrolled to NA if most of his/her classmates enrol to Express? © is he/she has better self-discipline and will not be influenced easily? to select school carefully - students at NA classes with high COP (Express) schools or Express classes with low COP (Express) schools may not be able to focus well/pay full attention during lessons (this can be one of the reasons causes these students do not perform well during PSLE).

Parents and students are strongly advised to attend open house and principal’s address of preferred school(s) e.g. to know about subjects offered as it will affect selection of subjects during S3.

To excel in academic result is important but good character/positive attitude building is even more important.

I have seen students with shocking results. Assumed did very well..end up only average.. bell curve..

Never be over confident.. hope for the best but prepared for the worse.

Yes, some students expecting to get 25X or 26X, but in the end got 23X / 24X
they were expecting to go IP school, in the end went neighbourhood school, with 23X

the students here don't understand what a nationwide exam means...whatever grades you assume you'll get will be different from you will eventually receive, regardless of the primary school. some students who are expecting to go to NYGH get 22X/23X.

                    Yes, some students over-optimistic.

One friend's son in NYPS, expecting at least 25X.
The mom was shocked, when her son's Psle T-score turned out 231.
Panic, she wanted her son to enter ACS Barker Secondary, but couldn't, because too many affliated students inside ACS.
being an outsider, 231 cannot get into ACS.
In the end, entered a neighbourhood school, not her ideal, nor her son's ideal Secondary school.

                    As for NYPS girls -
although affliated to NYGH, but if they fail to meet Cut-off-point (COP) 250 or above (like those who scored 22X / 23X / 24X), they also goto other neighbourhood schools in the end, since they do not meet NYGH COP.

It is common for results to end up not in line with what was originally expected. This is nothing surprising. I do have some weak students who are in danger of going to NA but they scored 230+ while others who are expected to do well… end up with much lower scores… I observed similar scenario for the last > than 10 years. But of course most will be within expectation. Why parents in this thread are concerned? For me, I think expectations must be right and always ready for the unexpected whether good or bad.

It is known that the easier the paper… the more the bell curve affects the final results. Share something about my cousin. She entered IP school with 262 PSLE score. End up told to leave at the end of year 4. Went to poly. While the rest of us with lower scores thrived. PSLE does not determine ur future. It is how u manage after PSLE that determines.

                        let's consider the mid-point case

usually 22X, 230 are achievable, by most students
Because 21X, 22X are average T-score, can be attained

anything from 235 upwards : can be tough

suppose 3 kids (not affliated to any Secondary school) :
(din want to discuss affliated primary schools, bec they already have the privilege, security of safety net. Some just need 200, can go back O level)

                        one got T-score 225, another 235, third got 245

with 225, 235 and 245 : IP schools already out

which are the better \"O\" level schools left, to choose ?
