One of my friend's son is almost completing 2015 CA1 Primary 6 exam papers from top schools. He purchased the papers in Nov 2015. When school reopens, the child can focus only on SA1 exam papers for Term 1. In term 2, can focus on the remaining exam papers (prelims and CA2) till end of Aug 2016. In middle Sep 2016 will buy 2016 prelim top school exam papers to practise before the real PSLE in Oct 2016. This boy is smart but very lazy. Luckily he has a goal to go Hwa Chong so that is why he is so hardworking this school holiday. As long as the child wakes up in time, it is still not too late to rush for the final lap in P6. A lazy but smart pupil can move faster if he is self-motivated too.

This boy sat down to discuss with parents about planning for his future and realised his PSLE score determines where he goes for secondary schools.
:salute: :salute: :salute: ... At the same time, it is making me 😓 😓 :nailbite: :nailbite:
Gotta 🙏 harder for DD to wake up from her lalaland soon.

Seriously it is a little overboard with 6 tutors.

i am only making sure my daughter doesn't lose touch with her subjects during the hols...but some of the kids are already full swing into P6 :nailbite: :scared:

actually it is possible to teach ahead, provided my girl here can remember

I also think the number of tution should reduce for next year… Stopped all the art class etc., all 6! Subjects tution means … Very little time for self study…I have conflicting views from my Friends … One who stopped all the tuition managed to score around 250+ and the other who went for tuition could get only 230+ …! Think the kids motivation is important … My Daughter still not taking it seriously… Have to see

I have another friend whose dd has never attended tuition before. The dd did her revision all by herself and scored 263. No intervention from parents. When unclear of concepts, she sought the help from school teachers.

I agree that spending too much time on tuition is not very productive too.

I heard from a relative whose ex-boss child was first in class every year and in the end the brain circuit snapped and the child became a patient at IMH. No joke, this is the result of studying too much. Therefore, it is very important to give free time to the children to do something that they could relax and enjoy.

Ah…interesting conversation on tuition. Agree that tuition does not guarantee success and moreover takes away precious self-study time as well as recreational time to rest and recharge.

Tuition does have it’s place in the Singapore system, as it stands now, but not all children require or will benefit from it

When my DCs were much younger, I actually thought we could get by with no tuition at all …like I did. But clearly it was not meant to be. DS1 struggled in 2 subjects in P4 and so I had to cave in and organise tuition for those 2 subjects.
But it took us a while before we got the right tutors for him. With the first tutors he was not benefiting much and most important of all, he was not really happy. It was only in P6 that we finally found the best fit for him.

Over tuitioning (if there is such a term) can surely be draining and ultimately detrimental to the child. As parents if we spend enough time with our children, we will know how much tuition, if any, they need. Sometimes less is more. The right tutor is also important and it is worthwhile taking the time and effort to look for the best fit.

My DS2 who is taking PSLE next year is not doing much these hols (unlike his elder bro , my DS1 during his pre-PSLE year). I know for DS2 this is probably the right strategy because he will definitely get bored and irritated by the time PSLE comes if I make him slog now.

Bottom line - every child is different. Tailor the strategy according to your child’s needs. And please do allow them to rest adequately. Happy hols!
