Which school are u particularly interested in? Even in SAP schools, standards of chinese varies. Hong Wen , Nanyang, Ai Tong and Tao Nan are those I know that have high standard for their chinese.

If i had understood it correctly, it's at P5 that the kids can opt out of higher chinese. Advice from teacher : Just let the child take it as far as he can... unless u see him / her struggling, it's probably time to pull him/ her out. It wouldnt be useful to pull him out after a yr of higher chinese.... becoz i myself was tempted to. I thought abt it this way: what values am i teaching him, to give up after a short try? So i just continue to support him in any way i could : financial by getting tutor, emotional: when he feels the going is tough to encourage him. His chinese teacher actually told me he cried in school twice becoz he had to write faster n much more, teacher made them do BI JI, extra notes for the class. And most importantly to create the environment for him, borrow chinese books from library , buy too, get him to watch chinese news.... even to get him to read chinese papers....
I've got friends that were from the P6 batch (2009) last year (1st class some more). Their chinese weren't really good. Or I should say, they can write, but can't speak.

My boy is in P4…at the end of this year, he will be streamed.

He has been taking HCL since P1 and I personally find it tough. Depending on his results later, I will see if he should opt out of HCL…but I heard that even normal Chinese is not easy either.

My friend’s son is in P5 and still continuing with HCL. The teacher made the class write lots of 笔记…if the kids need to go to the loo, they have to ‘borrow’ a ‘pass’ to do so…I was :!: bcos it’s not healthy to hold back urine. Anyway, will see how it goes. Sister-in-law’s daughter in St Nicholas doing Normal Chinese this year at P5 and recently heard that the poor girl is struggling. I pity the kids now. They have no chance to enjoy childhood.

I fully agreed with you. Nowadays, children do not seem to enjoy childhood. My gal is in P2 now. Every night, if not her school work, she is tied down to her tuition work or assessments. Sigh... how I miss her kindy days.. 😢

Childhood ? Gone are those days. I remember cycling or playing with neighbours every evening after school work is completed…can even cycle out to Coronation Plaza after school and hang out for a while.

Even kindy days are not that fun. But I still let my daughter (K2) to play with her toys/dolls or whatever she wishes. My son in P4 complains and grumbles when he sees his sister doing what she likes. This is one reason why we are not planning to put her in SAP school. It’s madness.

I have recently transferred her to a SAP school. Not sure if my expectations on her has gone up or is she really lacking behind. I have been screaming at her at the top of my voice every night. Is either she is dreaming or her carelessness is driving me nuts... Just wondering, she is changing or just me ? :?

Don't worry babe...you're not the only one screaming. My mum has banned me from coaching son in his studies AT HER PLACE.
My son dreams a lot, or else makes those mistakes which would have boosted his overall marks. For Maths, he will miss out on units of measurement all the time. For Eng, he will give me wrong answers on 'quantifiers' :x Just last night, hubby screamed at him.

So glad to find you ! At least your husband \"sings the same tune as you\". My in laws and HB think I am \"murdering\" their little princess. HB always tell me education is a learning process. Learn and then they forget, then you teach and they learn again. BUT I am really losing my cool. Is either she forgets, careless or dream.. But on hindsight, if she does not have these problems, guess she will be a perfect scorer And I will be a happier MUM !! 😢

I thought it's normal to get a pass to leave the class during lesson times, whether to go to the toilet, help teacher collect books from shelves outside the staff room, etc. You mean it's not common in pri schs? AFAIK, sec schs use passes.

How is SAP school different from non-SAP schools that offer higher chinese as well??? E.g Nan Chiau.

                        Schellen,

I don’t understand the need to get a pass to go to the loo…shouldn’t the child be allowed to go to the loo if there is a need ? My friend’s son needs to ‘borrow’ his friend’s pass to the loo, esp now with hot weather and drinking more water.

                        b2b3m4,
SAP schools uses Higher Chinese from P1. As for non-SAP schools, I think only those children who are stronger in Chinese take HCL.

                        babynicole,
My hubby teaches Maths…that’s why he knows my frustration. True, education is a learning process. But getting the Maths questions done correctly and then FORGETTING to write units of measurement means the whole question is WRONG. My son can even copy the number wrongly from the workings !!! :x Furthermore, he has a habit of missing out words when he writes.
