      Hi Periwinkle,

No wonder I didn’t ‘see’ you here. The weather is really hot of late…my son has a cough and blocked nose for the past few days…have been pumping my son with lots of liquids especially now.
Next week is the NAPFA test. I told him not to go for PE/modular CCA (table tennis) since he is not well.
Please take care of yourself too.

        E3:
        Hi Janet,

I like the idea of memorising the openings. Catch the marker's attention first. I have also taught her to conclude well.

It's quite different now for oral exam. For my dd's P1 oral, on top of reciting a poem, there was a passage to read for English. For Chinese, it's 看图说话 and 儿歌朗诵. P1 teachers practised with them. I guess P2 teachers will not, especially for the better classes.

For P2 Eng show-and-tell, kids will choose an item from a list given by the teacher. Not too sure whether it's the same for all classes. Eng T will give each of them an empty template with guidelines in which they have to fill in the Intro, Body and Conclusion. Thereafter, the teacher collects them, vets thru the contents, edits and the kids will memorise from that script.

For Chi compo, I get my dd to copy out a few 'common' scenarios - eg. Helping Others, Making a Mistake, Happy Day, Describing a place/ Person etc once a week. When we have time (which is quite hard to squeeze in nowadays), she'll write one compo that I gave and timed her. I'll include 成语 cos for her school's assignments, they were told that they MUST use the 成语. Nearer SA1, she'll write one compo every alternate day, 1 week before till the actual exam day.

For English, she'll do a quick Mind-map for each picture. Collate all the points and expand while writing. She will use one idiom whenever she could (I let her refer) for each compo. For beginnings, she likes \"flashback\". Same for English, one compo every alternate day, 1 week before SA1.

All these are still in progress, I will know whether these strategies work for her after her paper 1 exams. My main concern is her time-management.
        E3,

P2 will be having chinese composition?

Yes. Paper 1 consists of 看图写话 (10marks) and 造句 (10 marks). Did you receive a circular from school regarding all the test components for Chinese SA1? All the test components are given in that circular.

My dd told me that Oral for them will be conducted next week. I called up school and confirmed that English Oral will be conducted from 19th - 22nd. Based on the office, the circular is not out yet cos the chinese department apparently has not confirmed on the oral dates. However, my dd's Chinese teacher told the class that she'll conduct oral after their 听写默写 next Tuesday.

My P1 boy tells me that for their show and tell, they are supposed to collect a paper outside level 2 general office, fill it up and return to level 2 general office. He has been visiting the general office but he said that the paper is always run out and cannot get.

Can anyone advises what is it?

Is your son talking about the 'I am a star 'show and tell''? Last year, my dd's teacher photocopied extras and gave to them if more of them wished to participate. They performed an item during recess, can also be story-telling which was what my daughter did. Am I right? Or are the p1s having show and tell for oral this year? It used to be reciting a poem assigned by teacher and reading a passage. If in doubt, it's better to email teacher to clarify.

Thank you for the reply. I have checked yesterday evening on the circular . but i am not sure the 看图写话 has any helping words? how many words she needs to write?
I have let her practise the 造句. she has difficulties in writing out all the picture words. I really afraid that she will fail on the 看图写话. Really dont understand why needed to test a P2 students on the chinese compo! really difficult for the small students!!

My dd brought home 3 compos so far and did one in class, so they had done 4 chi compo practises already. Every picture has 10 helping phrases which consist of 4 成语 and 6词语. They are told by her teacher to mandatorily use 2成语 and all the词语.

Not sure whether this will help your dd, you can ask her to plan about 6-8 sentences for the pic compo. One beginning sentence, 4-6 sentences on the plot, one ending sentence. As she is planning, encourage her to use the helping words and put a number next to each helping phrase that she uses in each sentence so as to flow. Then, write out the sentences in order of the numbers. Since your dd has difficulty, keep it short and sweet (KISS).

                    Hi E3,

Son’s CL teacher told me last night that it’s necessary to use all the helping words for the picture compo. For each helping word, write 2-3 sentences. This should help lengthen the compo. Other than that, use some 开头. It’s possible to use conversation in the first paragraph.
Throw in some 成语 which helps to make the compo more ‘colourful’.

Janet, I understand your point of view. Thanks for the reminder. Your son is already in P4 and had done lots of compositions and is probably very accustomed to writing stories in chinese. Indeed, thanks for sharing your strategies. 😄

The helping words are guidelines and based on my dd, her teacher told them that they MUST use at least 2 成语 out of the 4 given ones, and that is provided that they know ALL the meanings to the 成语. The last compo has 成语 like 不堪设想, 全神贯注. Although she knows the meanings, she must also know how to apply them correctly. It's not easy. Furthermore, during the exam, having to write a compo of a certain standard and after that, form good sentences for the sentence-making section within the stipulated time is also a challenge for some. In Donkey's case, her dd is already having difficulty with sentence-forming, she'll just have to try keeping the story short and sweet to avoid making 'glaring' mistakes. It was just my two cents' worth of advice for her dd. 😉

I hv pm'ed you on my problem in how to help my dd speed up in her writing. I am worried for her time-management if too much emphasis is placed on spicing up the compo, she'll be left with not much time for sentence-making. Any P3 parents have the same problem with your kids last year? The weightage for both sections is the same, 10 marks each.
