Son’s CL teacher told me last night that it’s necessary to use all the helping words for the picture compo. For each helping word, write 2-3 sentences. This should help lengthen the compo. Other than that, use some 开头. It’s possible to use conversation in the first paragraph.
Throw in some 成语 which helps to make the compo more ‘colourful’.

Janet, I understand your point of view. Thanks for the reminder. Your son is already in P4 and had done lots of compositions and is probably very accustomed to writing stories in chinese. Indeed, thanks for sharing your strategies.

The helping words are guidelines and based on my dd, her teacher told them that they MUST use at least 2 成语 out of the 4 given ones, and that is provided that they know ALL the meanings to the 成语. The last compo has 成语 like 不堪设想, 全神贯注. Although she knows the meanings, she must also know how to apply them correctly. It's not easy. Furthermore, during the exam, having to write a compo of a certain standard and after that, form good sentences for the sentence-making section within the stipulated time is also a challenge for some. In Donkey's case, her dd is already having difficulty with sentence-forming, she'll just have to try keeping the story short and sweet to avoid making 'glaring' mistakes. It was just my two cents' worth of advice for her dd.

I hv pm'ed you on my problem in how to help my dd speed up in her writing. I am worried for her time-management if too much emphasis is placed on spicing up the compo, she'll be left with not much time for sentence-making. Any P3 parents have the same problem with your kids last year? The weightage for both sections is the same, 10 marks each.

During the recent Parent-Teacher meeting, CL teacher advised me to encourage son to use a few 成语 which is better than a whole lot of words. It’s like one 成语 says it all.

My son’s teacher in P2 and P3 didn’t tell them there is a MUST to use proverbs. But there is a need to do 作文 with different scenarios like indoor/outdoor, raining/sunny day. My son used to start with 一个风和日丽的星期天 but I told him to use something fresh because every child will be using the same 开头. This year, he has more proverbs in his textbook. They are quite practical but like you mentioned, he must know when and how to apply them correctly.

My P1 boy tells me that for their show and tell, they are supposed to collect a paper outside level 2 general office, fill it up and return to level 2 general office. He has been visiting the general office but he said that the paper is always run out and cannot get.


Can anyone advises what is it?

have you figured out what this show-n-tell is about? is it related to sa1 oral? my little one in p1 has not told me anything about this leh(???). hopefully, it is only an avenue for kids to try out their showmanship at recess, like e3 said.

If things haven’t changed, then show and tell is actually getting the child to try out showmanship. It’s actually SA1 ORAL. Select an item, describe briefly and then throw in some actions and expressions.

can your dd compute elapsed time fairly well? if yes, you can help her identify which is the half-way mark of the story (eg. description of 3rd person out of 5 people to talk about), then tell her that she has to wrap up this portion by half-time. btw, are they given a series of pictures or just 1 pic?

also are they given papers with single lines or those with boxes like the ones used in zuo4 wen2? with the former, perhaps you can get her to write with the flow but leave a line in between, so new/spice-up bits can be easily incorporated?

out of curiosity, how important is it for the kids to be tidy in their compo writing? will they be penalized for frequent insertions to spice up writing?

That's the same as my daughter's oral in P1. Act out a rhyme and read a passage. Show-and-tell for oral is for P2 where a list of items will be given for the kids to choose from.

The show-and-tell that prisnkc's boy mentioned should be the \"I am a Star\" mini-show as my dd mentioned that teachers were only given a few copies of the registration forms, so if more kids wished to perform and needed the forms, they could go to the pigeon hole which was labelled \"I am a Star\" outside the staff room to collect the forms. However, like what prisnkc's boy had said, the forms ran out very fast.

The \"I am a Star\" started last Friday according to my dd. Each class performers will be allocated recess time slots to perform their items. No worries, it's not a compulsory activity. It's good to build up their confidence for public speaking. They are having it for P2 too.
