Just to share with all: this is a picture taken at Bras Basah Complex. The escalator has stopped moving due to a pair of kids' crocs stiuck there. I think thankfully it looks like the owner has managed to get his foot out without hurt (and left the shoes there).


My kids saw these as they were with me. Not only me, a handful of people were taking pictures of this. Serve as a reminder to my kids not to play at the escalator too.

Wow, these Croc shoes should really be banned outside of beaches and pools! I thought they could only be stuck on the sides of the escalators, but seems they can also be stuck standing in the middle!

I wonder how those foamy flipflops ever survived all these yrs without any reported incident. After all they are made of abt the same material. :?

I think these Crocs sandals tend to be eaten by the escalator because the wearer does not step off the escalator in time when it reaches the top/bottom.


The most probably scenario is that the wearer, ie the child, still remains on the step while the step that he is on has already retreated into the back of the escalator, causing the Crocs sandals to be dragged in as well. I notice that most of these accidents usually occur at the very top or the very bottom of the escalator.

What parents should do is to to be alert and make sure that the child hops off quickly the moment they reach the top or bottom of the escalator. The rubber of Crocs sandals is also soft which makes it even easier for it to be sucked in by the escalator.

Standing in the middle of the step or within the yellow line does not help much, in my opinion. Being alert and step off the escalator in time.

Thats scary. I never like such shoes for my kids cos they are too costly for that ugly design. Although I did get a pair of cheap $5 ones in Thailand for my girl due to her shoe broken.

In the video that Insider posted, for current crocs wearer, they also suggest putting the strap infront. So that in case anything of such happen (touchwood), you are able to free your feet in time.

I imagine that shoes get caught in the escalator because they get wedged between steps when the steps are folding (nearing the top or bottom of the escalator). And this happens because the feet are too close to the inside of the step. Shoes like crocs are made of rubber, so it’s easier for a step to grip them and pull them in. (Gosh - do you understand what I’m saying?)


But anyway - I think parental supervision is the most important. No playing/ jumping/dancing or whatever on the escalator, always stand in the center of the step and hold hands.
