What would be considered a good score for P3 compo and zuowen? I don't want to over-react by signing on additional classes, but also worried that if no action taken, the road ahead will become even more slippery...
For me, 17/20 and above is consider good grades. 我的要求并不高啦

Thanks for your inputs on how to revise for Chinese.
That vocab book is really useful, I will make sure ds memorise them during Jun holiday. Though he passed his SA1, the results are rather disappointing. -

A decent pass in zuo wen is 14/20 according to school teacher, as long as you write out a complete story with a good conclusion, even though no good phrases used. But straight away fail if no conclusion. Teacher also shared that assuming you write the same way like in P2, a 18/20 zuo wen will usually get 14/20 in P3 at most as expectations are higher now.
But having said that, still have classmates who get 19.5/20 this round for zuo wen, and they can really write well in that 40 minutes based on the 'model' compo I saw.

share what did u do to revise? any good books? grammar revision by memorizing ? or exercise? vocab by spelling? or doing sentences? wonder what DD has been learning in P1/P2..
I just let dd do P4 Grammar book as P3 is like too easy. Just selective pages, especially on those that will be tested for exam eg: Agreement, Question tags, Verbs etc.sembgal:
DD English is the worst so far.. didn't expect I need to deal with her English at this stage.. she seems don't know any grammer or vocab and cant seem to write..what happen ! kek sei me
My dd did well for English overall in all components but yesterday when I asked her casually what is plural of wife, she answered wifes :yikes: She forgot what she learnt in p2!! I think I have to test and revise grammar rules with her this holiday.
For Vocabulary improvement, try http://www.dictionary.com to check up the meanings and http://www.vocabulary.com to learn challenging words through quiz.
As for English Oral, I bought a newly published 2016, P3 Casco English Oral book ($8.90) from Popular @ Thomson Plaza just before SA1 Oral exam. I just let my dd read. Her school English teacher did a very thorough revision on English Oral and mconline has the Oral Buddy for Oral revision too.
I also bought a Science book recommended by Popular staff at Thomson Plaza. The book is by EPH. Science Topical Class Tests Primary 3 by Y.M. Htun Dip.Ed. This Science assessment book has been reprinted twice in 2016. $8.90 only. Questions are very challenging and has commonly tested Science questions. I will say more difficult than top school p3 science exam papers. The standard is more like higher-order thinking Science questions. My dd gets Band 3 for the tests she did in this book. You see how challenging this book is? Thanks to staff who recommended me. :xedfingers:
Lastly, dd also reads voraciously. Discovery box, Adventure box, young scientists, model essays books, novels, interesting English books, she just reads them. She can finish one thick novel a day if she has no homework. Reading helps to improve her writing too. She didn't excel in English back in Primary 1 as Mathematics was her favourite subject. Now, she prefers English to Mathematics.
For Chinese, refer to this link for more info on how to improve Chinese. Lots of tips!!!
Anyone has tips on how to improve zuowen?
So far, only tried buying model composition books for DD to read. But she's not interested in them at all! Chinese storybooks also not keen. So whilst her P2 is good, P1 is terok... Wonder how is that possible.

You can read the above links. I found them by chance when I was doing a Google search on Chinese oral and composition resources online. I bought the Ocean P3/4composition guide book for my dd. The high volume of Chinese words which are very small and it puts her off reading that book entirely. I could only select those topics that are more common in exam, read word by word or phrase by phrase together with her and explain to her in English what the Chinese words mean. Eg: 火冒三丈
My dd will think that the phrase has something to do with 3 fires! I had to explain that it means very angry (生气). That is why you see the 火。
By looking at that thick book, we do not have the luxury of time to complete all the pages. We did just a few compositions.
Building up the language takes time and we have to start from somewhere. I'm sure Popular has many more of such Chinese model Composition books which parents can buy. Reading model compositions help to a certain extent. -
I)
for P3 Semester 2 (July to Nov, P3 Term 3 and Term 4) -
what are the likely topics, for Chinese 作文 ?
is it still those "do good deed", or "do bad deed", or "play naughty prank, then get scolding from Teacher" that type, or 作文 topic start to change ?
ii)
anyone scored full marks for Chinese Oral, in recent 2016 P3 SA1 ?
can share tips how you prepare your child, for Chinese Oral ? -
for English compo -
anyone been attending TAS (The Alternative Story), or MindStretcher or Learning Point, or The Learning Lab (TLL) high end tuition in English compo, & managed to score at least minimum 18/20 or scored full marks (20/20), in recent 2016 P3 SA1 English compo ?
or after attending these high end centre : scored around 12/20 or 13/20, that type of range ?
gather feedback :
are these tuition centre anywhere close to effective, in helping P3 students score very high, in English compo ? or din really help ?
can share your experience ? Thank you
(believe that a lot of you been attending these centre, especially when one were to read those thread, under TAS and MindStretcher) -
Are you attending any of them?
Cant use our case as yardstick tho. …My dd is attending one of three mentioned. She failed her compo but she told me the other day that she thinks that her tuition in Eng is helping her. So long as she thinks she is benefiting from it I guess it should be alright…at least for now.
For Chinese, she is attending one now…but got band 2 now from no tuition band 1 last year. Hmm…maybe I should start measuring hor…
