Heard a boy fr my DS's sch just received invitation from 4 sec sch to apply DSA via sports, 3 of them are IP sch. His results are slightly abv avg. What about DSA via sports? How many vacancies are usually allocated? How stringent are their selection criterias? Do sports DSA have a different quota as DSA Academic?
DS started competitive bowling last yr and so far only has 2 good tournaments report card to show. We intend to try MSHS and ACSI for bowling DSA but not sure what are his chances. We thought of NJC but he is an average student academically so we are reluctant to even try. -

Wow! He must have outstanding performance in his sport. But I wonder how will kids who are slightly above average cope in IP schools. Wouldn't they be overwhelmed by the academics?

Even school-going kids get \"head-hunted!\" Singapore Sports School recently invited ACSP top bowlers to try out too. Though I believe these ACS bowlers are probably vying for a place in ACSI instead. -

RI has a sports class of 30. Not sure if all of them were recruited thru dsa. What about DSA via sports? How many vacancies are usually allocated? How stringent are their selection criterias? Do sports DSA have a different quota as DSA Academic?

yes, some do find problems in coping but willing to work hard
and some will continue their \"slacking behaviour\".......
but the teachers are aware of it and send warnings to \"slackers\"
should they not buck up, they could be \"transfer\" out of the school. -
TQ Mathsparks for ur encouragement. It will be stressfull for the kid if his/her results are just average but enrolled in top IP school. He/she will have to spend a lot of time practising as well as catch up on the school work. Why not consider the sports sch ??

Hi ningy, why consider Sports School in this aspect?
I would like to know if the children are confined to stay in hostel at Sports School? Thanks!
Cheers! -
I tot sports sch will be suitable for those kids whose first priorities are the sports; then sports sch can truly support their passion and help them in their studies since time will be allocated for training for everyone. Otherwise, in IP sch; majority of the classmates’ priorities will be academic and the kids may be stressed out in keeping up with academic results (need to spend a lot of time doing projects) as well as spending a lot of time in training. But of course with the sports sch, i think need to stay in hostel 'cos the kids have to wake up early to exercise and attend training - not too sure abt the $$ - may be can get scholarship.

I believe some schools like RI are very understanding towards sports students. After all, the point of IP is to allow students a chance to focus on their strengths and talents including sports.

What I heard is that in IP sch, the sports talents will be grouped into the same class, and their academic timetables will accomodate their training and competition schedules. Since the whole class are sports studetns, shouldn’t not be too stressfull unless they compare themselves with other classes. I also heard some sports students in IP schs do O levels, instead of IP programme. Maybe depending on their results gua…

I heard other reason going for O level was the students find the JC years of that school too stressful and taking O level give them a chance to open their door to other JC since the ultimate route is to get A level and go to Uni or O level give them an additional option of joining poly, not necc due to poor result. Duno how true are all these ...
