Don't forget to support our paddlers. SIN vs CHN now on Okto. Looks like CHN is leading...and no one seems to be around in Rio to support SIN šŸ˜ž

        Won the gold medal
Dunno how true is the reason for free ice cream :rotflmao:
If true , rich Sch board member

The school (ACS ?) still alright lah. They may be happy that an alumni achieve success mah.

        But other http://www.mrbrown.com/blog/2016/08/mrbrowns-joseph-schooling-bandwagon-list-of-shame.html really...

Nestle Milo hasn't. Why ah? Thought JS loves Milo Dinosaur from Marine Parade Central hawker centre? He always goes there to drink from uncle's stall.

I am very happy that Joseph Schooling won an Olympic gold medal and did Singapore proud. But let us not forget about Quah Zheng Wen. I am sure he (and his parents) had put in a lot of hard work as well.

It took us 51 years to get a gold medalist, this road is tough.

I find the most amazing Singapore Olympian for Rio2016 isn't Joseph Schooling; he would be 2nd on my list.

Saiyidah Aisyah story is even more inspiring, even though she only finishes something like 23 out of 32.

Hard work must go hand in hand with one's latent talent/gift/DNA/physical+mental attributes also. One may have big dreams and aspirations and may ask parents or the country for funding/sponsorship/NS or academic deferment to fulfil one's dream, but if one's physique isn't cut for a particular sport, one can't quite excel in it either. I've not read up much on the said rower, but I know family support is very critical and she doesn't have it 100% like Joe.

Anyway, all of them are inspiring and deserve our :salute: I also watched Liang Diaoyu and Derek Wong. They'd put up a gallant fight too. Don't forget Timothee Yap who ran alongside Usain Bolt, his idol.

While it is true that innate talent is essential for the quest for excellence, I feel what is more important (and probably more inspiring) is the passion that fuels the drive. Have you watched Gattaca? That is one of the movies that really warmed my heart.

We are in the age where the eagerness to win blurs the line between shameless lies and decency. This is just one of the symptoms. Just look at brexit and the Drumpf phenomena. In fact, common decency is now being maligned as \"being politically correct\" by the liars. It is really sad to see the world regressing after so many years of progress.

Thanks for the link. It's sad that our garmen does not support local talent as much as foreign talent.

At the end of the day, our local talent brought in the Gold solely on his own self unlike a Bronze from foreign talent who costs more to support.

Is that why Quah doesn't want to try for 2020 Olympics anymore?

Which Quah are you referring to? The Quah family has produced 3 national swimmers, in which 2 are representing Singapore in Rio 2016.

While I don't think that's the reason why Quah (I am assuming Zheng Wen) doesn't want to try for 2020, the support for upcoming local athletes from the Gov are certainly appalling. That said, those support are NOT lacking after they won something important though (and suddenly, everyone seems to have play a significant part in their development). If only the Quah (or those who are so eager to bask in JS glory) can afford US$1m* to send him to US, maybe we could have another medalist apart from JS in Tokyo 2020.

*US$1m is about 0.3% of the S$500m+ of the outstanding tuition fee loans and study loans given out to students of institutes of higher learning. I believe someone should really revisit our Gov priorities.
