While it is true that innate talent is essential for the quest for excellence, I feel what is more important (and probably more inspiring) is the passion that fuels the drive. Have you watched Gattaca? That is one of the movies that really warmed my heart.

The school (ACS ?) still alright lah. They may be happy that an alumni achieve success mah.

        But other http://www.mrbrown.com/blog/2016/08/mrbrowns-joseph-schooling-bandwagon-list-of-shame.html really...
We are in the age where the eagerness to win blurs the line between shameless lies and decency. This is just one of the symptoms. Just look at brexit and the Drumpf phenomena. In fact, common decency is now being maligned as \"being politically correct\" by the liars. It is really sad to see the world regressing after so many years of progress.

Thanks for the link. It's sad that our garmen does not support local talent as much as foreign talent.

At the end of the day, our local talent brought in the Gold solely on his own self unlike a Bronze from foreign talent who costs more to support.

Is that why Quah doesn't want to try for 2020 Olympics anymore?

Which Quah are you referring to? The Quah family has produced 3 national swimmers, in which 2 are representing Singapore in Rio 2016.

While I don't think that's the reason why Quah (I am assuming Zheng Wen) doesn't want to try for 2020, the support for upcoming local athletes from the Gov are certainly appalling. That said, those support are NOT lacking after they won something important though (and suddenly, everyone seems to have play a significant part in their development). If only the Quah (or those who are so eager to bask in JS glory) can afford US$1m* to send him to US, maybe we could have another medalist apart from JS in Tokyo 2020.

*US$1m is about 0.3% of the S$500m+ of the outstanding tuition fee loans and study loans given out to students of institutes of higher learning. I believe someone should really revisit our Gov priorities.

For foreigners, I believe they need to have proven themselves first? Our govt doesn't support them from the beginning. I do feel that more support needs to be given to our own sportskids, accepting that there will be a high attrition rate. We can't expect them all to be able to fund their own training till they have achieved something. And I also feel that there are too many jumping on the \"we played a part\" bandwagon! If he come in unplaced, would they have said anything?

Depending on your definition of \"proving themselves\". Some are brought in young, and solely kept based on their estimated potential. Those who succeed eventually, stayed. Those who don't, say goodbye. It's like a job, with citizenship (that few care about) attached.

However, the Gov does support them from the beginning as they are brought in here to train. So there's a stipend plus accommodation, education, etc that the Gov takes care of.

BTW, while I say the Gov support is appalling in my previous post, it should be noted that there's a spexScholarship available for our athletes. The top tier athletes (which JS also belongs to) can receive a monthly stipend of up to $8,000. While the cash injection is welcome, I am not sure that's the level of support that will ensure our sporting success*

*Off topic: I was thinking about the baby bonus. While the cash injection is also welcome, it didn't really solve our growth rate, resulting in the mass import of abled bodies.

Yes, I am referring to Quah Zheng Wen. I see he has potential n like u said, if given support all the way, I believe he can also produce a medal. I read that he didn't apply for NS deferment, that is why I concluded he doesn't want to try the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Not every family can afford financial support like JS, so it's really a loss to our nation.

This is another sore thumb of our garmen - locals are never given priorities. Afterall, isn't sponsorship from taxpayers' $$$? Shldnt we support local talent first? It takes 7 years for JS to reach the podium, success is not overnight but our garmen would much prefer sponsoring foreign talent whom they deemed to stand a better n quicker chance of attaining international glory.

Watching the Women Table Tennis semifinals is just like watching China A Team vs China B Team.

Also didn't the silver medalist simply retired back to her homeland after being sponsored by us, taxpayers? Is there anything to be proud of?
