Island Bie:
If the COP for a SAP school is 258 as published, must the T-Score be 258 or can be 256 +2 (as in Merit in HCL)?
256+2 will be considered -

I have a feeling this year's COP is going to be like last year's.
@bskBigDevil:
Just got the results. My girl got 252. Any chance of getting IP
Congrats!
Depends on how the rest of the cohort did.
Last year COP of a few IP schools were close to this score,
River Valley - 253
Cedar - 254
Temasek - 253
So if COP this year is lower, then your girl has a good chance.
Since the 3 schools nicely cover East, West and Central,
pick the one nearest to home as first choice and hope that the COP
will be lower.
But do note that the partnering JC for Cedar is Victoria which is in the East.
Good luck! -

He is v keen n I myself am already learning Japanese. Of course my course and his course will definitely be different. N he has been wanting to take up French this year but due to PSLE we did not allow him to. DH & I did suggest to him not to take extra subject unnecessarily. I will talk to him again. Thanks for your advice.
If your child is linguistically inclined and loves that culture, why not? From a practical standpoint, I'd look at:
It depends on your child's forte. If he/she's good in languages, then I say go for it!smolbean:
Hi mummies,
Which 3rd language is better? French, Japanese, German or Spanish?
Is it too heavy to take 3rd language?
If he/she's not performing that well (in languages), you may want to discuss with him/her and people like his/her tutors. Personally, my child scored in the 260 range but did not opt for third language. It depends on every child'S strength and weaknesses. Make sure that your child can cope before opting for third language!
1. Bilateral trade / standing free trade agreements or pacts / work in progress partnerships
2. Foreign direct investment in SG (MNCs here/job openings requiring specific lang skills)
3. Country's FDI in the region esp China (i.e. potential posting opportunities)
4. Population of jobseekers conversant in that language worldwide (i.e. competitors like multilingual Europeans or trilingual PRC nationals who will be considered first for lucrative MNC jobs in EU or mainland respectively)
5. No. of people speaking that language (e.g. Spanish is 3rd in the world)
6. Proximity of MOELC to my child's sec school
7. My child's CCA commitments (i.e. did child DSA thru sports or will have 5X/wk sports training)
8. Foundation (e.g. HMT is very strong, hence will be a breeze to study Jap; or attended school/grew up in EU during childhood)
For those thinking of govt scholarships, if you're offered a place in an EU or Jap college, you'll be required to spend a year taking its foundational course, so no prior knowledge of the lang is actually ok
If you're really keen, NUS FASS also offers those lang modules. You don't need to have taken 3rd lang in sec school to excel in those uni courses.
If you're ever posted to a country that speaks those langs, some employers do pay for expats to attend crash lang courses, so don't worry...
Which lang is the best? Depends on your interest. Most 'employable'? I'd think it's Jap, followed by Spanish (but bear in mind that's if you're looking to advance your career in North and Latin Am). However, most of my friends inclduing my dh who took Jap first ended up working in Japan, then got posted to mainland as the Jap employers view their HMT as an invaluable asset. Those who took French/studied in French unis somehow didn't end up in French MNCs nor get posted to France. It seems like an easy lang to learn, but not very 'marketable' skill to possess during my era. I'm glad I dropped French. German is a difficult language (Spanish syntax is not easy either) but Germany as we all know is a superpower in EU and have many established MNCs worldwide. But frankly, you don't need to know German to get a job in Deutsche Bank, Borsch or Siemens lah, and note too there're many German-speaking jobseekers in EU who can replace you easily.
If you think 3rd lang won't be a burden, why not keep an open mind and just try out for 1 year and see how child fares. It's like those kids who are already gifted in Art or Music...taking AEP and MEP is a breeze and advantage as they don't need to work very hard to score a distinction. It mustn't be a chore. Must be an enjoyment, something child looks forward to every week.
PS: China is our largest trading partner. TPP is almost dead. :siam: -
exactly, so I am recommending Jap followed by Spanish for my gal. I personally prefer Spanish cos it is the universal language in Europe and Latin America. Jap will definitely be oversubscribed.
-
Would learning Japanese be harder since you will need to memorize the
50 or so Hiragana characters, while it’s the familiar alphabets for the other languages? -
yes Jap learning is difficult I heard from students taking in NUS language centre.
-
dd2 won't be taking 3rd lang. Actually try to excel in Chinese can liao lah. This is Singapore's future direction isn't it? Even the angmo can speak Mandarin

Even Donald Trump’s 5 year old grand-daughter in US is learning Mandarin, reciting Chinese poems
-
DD get 253 +3. Does she has a chance to get in IP in St Nic / Dunman High / Cedar? Her score is 1-2 marks below COP. Any advise is greatly appreciated.
-
It is anybody’s guess whether this year’s COP will
be higher, lower or the same as last year’s.
You can certainly choose 2 of them and place them
as your 2 top choices, but better play safe with your 3 - 6 choices.
