      Hi all,

My K1 boy is attending ICR-P and soon ready to advance to ICR. However i feel he hasn't learnt much in the past 6 months. While ICR-P is individually paced, ICR is structured weekly lesson. ICR can be quite overwhelming and fast pace: there is weekly spelling and one new sound each week. The whole ICR is covered in 12 months.

Now I'm wondering, should I withdraw and put him in montessori phonics so that he can progress slowly but steadily based on his own ability. Is montessori syllabus more structured? Does it build a better foundation for reading & spelling? I don't mind slow, more importantly the groundwork must be done.

Anyone with experience and advice for me?

      Thanks in advance :))

There are lots of options to choose from: British Council, I Know English, LCentral, Etc. But there is something I wish to add.

The #1 bit of advice I can give is to find the best teacher!

Great material and methods of instruction in the wrong hands isn't going to help your child very much. Don't just ask about the teachers, demand to meet the teacher who will be teaching your child and really see if your kid gets along with them.
My daughter has been fortunate as she is a social butterfly and doesn't have any issues with new people. But after teaching in Singapore for nearly ten years I can say that I've met a lot of students who didn't learn well because they didn't connect with the teacher. I believe most people should look for a teacher who is fun yet really integrates the learning into everything they do. That is my personal philosophy and that's how I teach, and my daughter could read in English and Thai by the time she was 5+.
If you would like any tips for help at home don't hesitate to PM too.

              Hi,

My son is going to K1 next year, will it be too early to start him on en enrichment class?

If he should start now, which center would you recommend? Would it be more suitable to hire a tutor instead?

              Thanks in advance!

Can he read and write well enough for his age? If he can, then don't need to go for enrichment..I presume you are asking for English? Sometimes, having individual attention and coaching from parents is the best..but if not, can try some of the schools like I Can Read for enrichment but their effectiveness I am not too sure as I have not personally tried them. Some people say it works some say it depends on the teacher.

I have personally heard from friends of this enrichment for reading and writing that is good- Seeds D Learning for preschool kids, maybe can check them out.

My son's Eng language and writing is below expectation base on his school review, but he is a preemie and perviously slow in body development for 4.5 months.

We cant coach him as we are not up to the standard, I do not want him to pick up the lousy Eng from us.

We hope to find a suitable center to give him e correct Eng foundation. It will be so hard to study in SG if Eng is not good. šŸ˜“

šŸ˜„ i was thinking of that too..my K1 dd2 been writing funny English words to me coz of weak phonics I believe plus her not so accurate pronounciation..and everytime I see this, I will think of ctr but then own part havent done yet.. keep telling myself got to spend more time with her on reading but difficult to achieve that.
