HCI's term for Year-5 ended before A Level exams started ? Wow, that was early !

RI's term for Year-5 will end next Friday, 25/11 (like NYJC). However, students do not need to go to school on days they do not have lectures.

Hello! Wonder if anyone can give insight on the average school bag load in nyjc (or any other jc ). Is it still going to be like secondary school where students have to lug a number of heavy textbooks to school ? Are laptops required ? Any lockers in nyjc ?

Nope, there are no textbooks in JC. Topical notes are written and compiled by lecturers. Students then purchase them from the college's bookshop as a class when the required notes are ready. Hence, for students who pack their bag and bring only the required materials, the bag will be quite light.

Laptops are not required, but I highly recommend having it for PW and for studying. It is not necessary to bring laptops to school unless PW lesson requires it. If you do not have a laptop, you may borrow it from the college when you need it and return by the end of that day. For those who can't afford laptops or do not have computers at home, NYJC lends laptop that you can bring home and will only need to return at the end of the year (if I recall correctly).

Lastly, there are lockers that can be rented at a fee. However not many students need one.

Anyone here who is studying / has children studying h2 translation ? Dd seems interested in translation . It would be appreciated if someone can provide more info on it as it is still a relatively new subject

I have a friend doing translation. She finds it quite daunting as this is the first year of examination. As a result, there is lack of certainty regarding how the paper will be like and how the results will be. She noted that many schools across Singapore approach the subject differently, such in terms of content. Perhaps after the paper on 5 Dec 2016 more light will be shed.

However I wish to add that Translation is only offered as a H2 subject - studnts cannot drop this subject to H1. So will really need to work hard and ensure she is confident in the subject and has the aptitude for it before choosing it. Of course, not forgetting that when choosing subjects, there must be a goal in mind - is there are preferred courses in Uni that she wants? If so, take note of the pre-requisites.

can I check how many points can be deducted if one is from Chung Cheng High (Yishun)? How many students from that school has Nanyang JC took in based on previous 2 years? cut off points for JC1 is still 6/7?

A 2 points bonus is awarded to students from either Chung Cheng High School (Main) or Chung Cheng High School (Yishun), ONLY if they put their first choice as NYJC (Science/Arts). Should the students want to apply to both the science and arts stream, they have to put NYJC (both streams) as their top 2 choices, in order to enjoy the bonus points.

If I am not wrong, the approximate number of the intake of students is about 700. I heard that about 40 odd students for the 2016 intake comes from Chung Cheng High School (Main). Regarding Chung Cheng High School (Yishun), I am clueless.

Cut off points vary from year to year. There's no fixed range. Yes, the cut off points for NYJC is 6 for science and 7 for arts for the 2016 intake.
