I can't seem to find the link between SMBO & SCGS. When I do a search, Rosyth's name keep popping out. :scratchhead:
One of the top 5 SMBO girl last year went to RGS......hilarious!!sleepy:
I am not aware that there is such a competition called Bilingual Olympiad. I am not sure dd's school even participated!! So the top 30 winners are not from a nation-wide kind of competition.
I'm pretty sure your dd's school participated
I have never heard of this competition before during dd1's era. Only found out when dd2 told me. -

I know that at least for one of the gep centres, most participants are from China. For other competition that limits participants, geppers are usually selected. But, I qualify that this is only based on my observation from one gep centre.I am not aware that there is such a competition called Bilingual Olympiad. I am not sure dd's school even participated!! So the top 30 winners are not from a nation-wide kind of competition.
My friend told me she wanted to let her P6 GEP daughter try DSA under this domain but found out that her daughter had already rejected to do a \"test\" earlier, whereby the teacher will select the best (sleepy's step 1).
And don't forget, a MS child's chances of being selected may be further lowered if he/she is studying in a GEP centre. :siam:
Friend suspect that the majority of the winners are either from China or Malaysia.

You mean RGPS primary, not RGS (IP) Secondary ?
They only sent in Primary school students, for Science Olympiad contest : as this contest is open for Upper primary school students, not applicable to Secondary school students.
Unless you are saying that this student had previously studied in RGPS before, now she is in RGS Secondary.
Anyway, RGPS, being a GEP school : normally the 5 students selected to represent Rgps in Science Olympiad contest, are often GEP students, seldom picked from Mainstream. Unless exceptional Mainstream students (in GEP schools) demo outstanding talent, for Science.
For Secondary school students : that will be another contest, under another name, whereby break down by individual Science subject category, i.e. whether is pure Physics / Biology / Chemistry Secondary school contest. -

normally, more participants for this Bilingual contest, tend to come from SAP schools + GEP centre.I am not aware that there is such a competition called Bilingual Olympiad. I am not sure dd's school even participated!! So the top 30 winners are not from a nation-wide kind of competition.

Perhaps SAP schools' participants tend to have a higher chance of winning ? -
phtthp:
Yes, I think so too. More likely SAP schools/GEP centres participate.

But if the rest/majority of the primary schools did not participate, how do we know other primary schools kids don't have a chance of winning? -

It's certainly not monopolised by GEP centres and SAP schools.
http://punggolpri.moe.edu.sg/our-pride/achievements-and-affirmations/competitions/2014
Within GEP centres, some MSrs may be selected as well if they catch their HOD's eyes--i.e. new immigrants with 1 or 2 PRC or Malaysian Chinese parents like you observed. Well, it shouldn't come as a surprise to us, isn't it? The native speakers are truly very good
I guess if HODs were to pick only GEPpers to participate in SMBO, it'd be mainly becos the schools want to ζδ»δ»¬δΈζγAs you know, some GEPpers may not perform very well in PSLE (didn't keep up with MS syllabus), or are mere gifted generalists with no CCA to showcase, so at least by giving them a leadership hat, a national competition to participate even when their HMT may not be as good as some MS native speakers, it may help heighten their chances for DSAs. -
