8 Junior Colleges are Merging? Rumors or Reality?

When schools tell you the ratio as 10:1, do they mean a class of 10 students to 1 teacher? Or that there are 10 time more students than teachers in the school? Because they are not necessarily the same. Schools always have lower student to teacher ratio overall than in a class (because not all teachers will be teaching in a class at any one moment). Just wondering.

Yes, that's what I thought. Because someone was saying that a school's student:teacher ration was 10:1 compared to classes of 20+ in other schools - I just wanted to check if it was comparing apples with apples. Probably not, I guess.

Let me repeat, what I am trying to say is that when class size is small, the student-teacher ratio will be small and vice versa. Since students could benefit from a smaller student-teacher ratio (and smaller tutorial class), why not take the opportunity to see the falling enrolment as an opportunity to live with a smaller student-teacher ratio to help this group of weaker JC students instead of just merging the JCs, which in turn, is likely to spread the burden around and lead to bigger tutorial classes for some JCs.

Totally agree!!that is exactly what is on my mind also.. But sadly, help to this group of wearker students is obviously less important than ...
& tuition for jc level is :moneyflies:

I don't think MOE really cares about the benefits of \"smaller class sizes\" or \"weaker students\" and all.

I believe the key phrase MOE used is \"critical mass\" - i.e. packing everyone in. They will continue with the 40 students per class.

On another note, I feel sorry for the CCA coaches, trainers, physiotherapists, etc who will lose their jobs.

CCA coaches ( the popular ones) income is not low , and may not get taxed exactly the gross income
eg a dance coach is easily $80 to $100(+) PER HOUR , not to say the popular sports coach.
parents who sent kids for \"Sports tuition\" or performing art tuition will know better how much they pay coach for that extra personal coaching :evil:
Schs spent a lot on maintaining cca & other operating cost is likely a big main reason for closure / merger. Reaping Economies of scale seem to be impt to moe now :?
