      BlackAngel:
ha, i agree to one of the post, Set up a school called: I Hate Chinese secondary school. Those who select to go to this school no need to count chinese in PSLE. just need to use 3 subjects = 300 marks.

DSA Entry Condition: They must prove that they really hate the subject to the core and want to migrate overseas because of this subject. A medical visit to IMH is preferred. This group of losers (or you can call them bright sparks or elites) are given a new syllabus called CL H (H for hatred). They only need to know 3 phrases to pass CL H. 我恨华文, 我讨厌华文, 我不是华人。

Thanks, this is the exact unhelpful posturing we had 30 years ago..... 😞

Do you train your kids in dialects?? :?

I speak dialect to my kid, kenna scolded by wife.... 😢 she said we are not Ah Beng/Seng family.

I would like my kid to learn to speak hokkien, cantonese, teochew. You can communicate warmly with most chinese around the whole world. 😉

          nan.nan:

I belong to the camp where we believe learning the Chinese language is our duty, so long as I carry the Chinese gene or DNA in my blood.
:celebrate: Exactly the same sentiments! I like that. Hit the nail right on its head! In fact, I always have this naggy feeling inside me to learn the \"other\" language that's also in my blood as well. 😄

I do not understand the new formula. Can anyone kindly explain to me :?

Meaning only 3 subjects are used to calculate the PSLE score. English and Maths, and the best of Chinese or Science. This is only an idea of the Straits Times journalist, and I think it is a very bad idea.

Power of compromise and ends up killing the goose that lay the golden eggs! Ironies in life...

Looking at Taiwan and Japan, they are more/less monolingual countries. However, they are quite good in economy and technology. :celebrate:

Watch The Million Dollar Elementary School by Xiao Yan. Their pri sch students learn chinese very chemmm. (in depth)

May be we can learn from them... :celebrate:

alright, should not set up IHCSS. Must let the kids love the language and appreciate the culture. Sorry, folks. 😄

                        Anyone read today's newspapers ? On page 2 :

                        A new PSLE formula: EM+1

In the article, it was written that only one in ten students do very well in English, Maths, Science, but struggle in Chinese.

How can MOE change policies just to suit the minority ?

The article also proposed that schools should take the best of Chinese and Science, only English and Maths are compulsory.
Ya, in recent days, there have been more people proposing this L1R2. So, I won't be surprised if it really happens as MOE feels that this is the only way to please both camps.

Looks like MOE had provided the one in ten statistics to ST. Geez, for the sake of this minority 10%, MOE wants to tweak the system to their advantage, so that they can enter top sec schools. Please lah, it's not the end of the world if they can't enter into these schools. And Mr Ng, by saying that, is putting down the neighbourhood sec. schools.

Those who do poorly in English tend to come from lowest income households. On the other hand, those who do badly in Chinese MT tends to come from the other end of the socio-economic spectrum. It's very dangerous and worrying that the rules are to be changed to benefit the elitist minority group.

Ground rules must be fair to all so that there is equity of opportunity and true meritocracy esp. in the field of education.

I think someone had suggested before in another thread. Since they find Chinese so difficult to learn, then let them take Malay/Tamil as the MT.
