      Hi!

Anyone here whose son went to HCI without any accompanying friends from primary school?

Traditionally, my son's primary school only has 1 or 2 kids, if not none, going to HCI. I am wondering how difficult the adjustment would be for my kid without knowing anyone in the School. Plus he isn't taking HCL now. Hmmm.
My son went to HCI with 1 classmate and 1 schoolmate. He was placed in a different consortium as the other 2. Even those 2 ended up in different classes.

Don't worry about making friends ๐Ÿ™‚ My son is very happy in HCI. Bu I must say that HCL isn't that easy but need some effort.

Thanks so much for all your reassurances!

I personally went from non-HCL to HCL in Sec Schoolโ€ฆI failed now and then but eventually it was an A1 for O levels and AO levels. However I think in the past, teachers tended to force us to memorize a lot of stuff so I donโ€™t recall enjoying HCL that much. I also got scolded a lot - tough love. But I am glad I have attained a certain level of proficiency.

Regarding the consortium, may I assume all the consortiums provide a warm environment and we donโ€™t really have to worry or read too much into where they are being assigned? Cheers

hi newkeynesian....it was leadership; we didn't try other categories....the only other possibility for us was sports.

Jumping in your conversation. ๐Ÿ˜„ My son received CO from Maths. We are not chinese but my son's mother tongue in school is Chinese. ๐Ÿ˜„ I spoke to the teachers during APMOPS camp about my concern and was told they'll cosider every aspect and if he gets CO that means they think he'll be able to cope with it. They also told me school provides every support to the students. I am worried about his CL he manages to get A but probably that wont be enough as I am sure the standard of CL in HCI will be very high.
My son loves this school so I have no choice.
will appreciate any tips by seniors on how to deal with CL.

              Hi Kash313,

Please see my earlier post on my own experience moving to a SAP school to read HCL in Secondary School. I am from an English-speaking family. My dad was an islander and he cannot speak/write Mandarin. I was in a primary school whose Chinese PSLE grades are below national average since I was there.

When I was in Secondary School, I took HCL and failed it a few times in lower Secondary. But at the end of Sec 3 when we took the O level Chinese, I scored an A1 (school exams was at best 55 if not nearing fail, or fail). I didnโ€™t get an A1 for HCL at the end of Sec 4, but I took it in JC1 and scored an A1 for AO Chinese, in spite of not attending any Chinese lessons in JC1.

I think HCL is not insurmountable. Watch more Chinese drama!! I think it helps! I also feel the exposure to Chinese culture and to China is very important for our kidsโ€™ generation, and to give them the environment to attain as much language acquisition as possible. Our kids will all reach different levels of Chinese proficiency eventually, but it doesnโ€™t matter. I can provide the home environment for English, but not for Chinese, so Iโ€™ll let the school do it! hahahha

              Just my thoughts.

Yep! Each consortium has their own group of teachers, who work mostly with students from the same consortium, so they are better able to help each student out more effectively ๐Ÿ˜„

Will the child be retain if there is a fail in one of the subjects in year end examination or will he still be allowed to move on to next grade, eg. sec1 to sec 2 or sec 2 to sec 3? Is there anyone who dont make it to Year 5 or JC1?

I have heard that this school has got 1-2 O level classes, but any idea at which level will the boy be put into this class?
