Don't think it can be 20%. It'll be difficult to divide the remaining 80% into 3 equally for the other 3 subjects. More likely 22% or 19%. If not, then one other subject need to reduce weightage too. So become 20,20 30,30. Easier to calculate.

Regardless of 22% or 19%, it is still a substantial %

Unless it is reduced to some negligible % (unlikely) I don't think it's wise to pay lesser attention to Chinese subject

I think it's an unprecedented move... Minister and MOE officials met up with the group of people who initiated the 芳林公园签名会 this morning (8 May). PM and Minister will be meeting the media next Tuesday....

At the invitation of Minister for Education Dr Ng Eng Hen, a group of us held a session with him at the MOE headquarters on 8 May 2010 at 11am. In attendance were four other officials.

During the meeting, we conveyed our concern and the general public’s opinions towards the weightage of mother tongue languages at PSLE.

Minister Ng said, “I agree with everything you said. There is no difference between what you want and what MOE wants.” During the conversation, he said that “MOE has no intention of diluting the importance of MTL” and he emphasised that “the importance of MTL will be maintained”. He also confirmed that a press conference will be held this coming Tuesday to further explain this matter.

MOE gave us this statement to distribute and announce after the meeting: “Minister gave his assurance that the Ministry has no intention whatsoever of reducing the importance of mother tongue languages at PSLE. He emphasised that bilingualism has served Singapore well and will continue to be a cornerstone of our education system. PM and Minister will be meeting the media next Tuesday to speak further on this.”

I am pessimistically waiting for how MOE come out with a magic receipt to cut MT weightage without disturbing importance of MTL.

what we are saying is that it is unfair to lower the weightage of any subject just to suit certain group of people

it is simply unfair

either abolish it or make it equal weightage

a pupil who can master all 4 subjects is simply more capable and more deserving than one who can only master 3 subjects

but it is unacceptably unfair to change the system to suit their needs...

An arbitary cut in % will hurt the situation further.

So if MOE plans to move ahead, they would have to work out substantial statistics plus simulation to justify how the cut can really help that group of students. If it fails in its mission, MOE has more to lose because they have awoken the "giant" and set a precedence. There will be future foul cries of other nature and this would be used against them.

So if MOE is not confident to ensure that this can solve the problem, it is a poor move to cause a ripple without achieving its objective.
