Section B (open ended questions) for science

My dd1 ex tutor provided her a template (step by step answers) for some of the commonly tested qns. For example, of the question is on friction, the answer should be structured like surface A is rougher than surface B –> there is more friction between xx and surface A than surface B –> ball takes longer time to roll on surface A

has anyone tried cce.education? they seems to be the only centre that offers a concrete course among the 3? Or anyone has any other recommendation in the east cce education is too far for me. Their weekend course are nearly full too.

When it comes to open ended section of the exams. It is more than simply stating the keywords. Each question is unique and require students to analysis the question and write the appropriate answer base on the question.


There are some easy to answer questions such as “comparison” type of questions where most students are taught in school on how to handle them. But memorizing such format is clearly insufficient for students as science open ended questions comes in too many varieties and flavour. So as the quote suggested, students need to have the right skills and mindset before they can do well for that!

Route memorization is clearly insufficient for A in PSLE.

So do you recommend CCE education? I did hear about the centre before and I am thinking of sending my child to their holiday program. The pricing is reasonable and they have a centre at Bishan that is near my place.

So basically skills and mindset is important right? I tried googling and not many centre seems to be capable to teach that.

My daughter had the same problem last year. Tuition really helps as long as you choose the best one.


One thing I realized from my daughter’s experience is teachers and (most) tutors don’t really teach, but are more likely to practice route memorization in class. My daughter wasn’t pressured because not much worksheets were given. From what I saw, information was presented in several ways to help her grasp the concepts on a deeper level.

I just checked CCE’s website and found it interesting how they give emphasis on cognitive intelligence, which I haven’t heard of before. I haven’t tried it with my daughter yet, but you can check it out.

Hello everyone~


I noted that many students can do well for MCQ but struggled at open ended questions. My DD can usually scored about 22 out of 40 and I am worried for her PSLE next year!

I have taught her to use keywords and her school also seems to teach them certain format, but it seems to me that it is still not enough.

As science is her favourite subject, anyone has any advice on how she could improve on her section B? I am worried as it will be her PSLE next year. :yikes:

I hired 2 tutors for my son last year but they didn’t help at all. It was only when I enrolled him in a tuition center that he showed minimal improvement. But I’m getting worried because he’ll be P6 next year. I feel the need to reinforce his learning on a bigger scale.
