Why is she not enough?Hi,
My kids who are non-chinese have been doing Chinese since N1. I have had a girl who is studying in Poly come once a week to help them with their chinese. However, I now realise that she is not enough, I need a trained Chinese tutor who can help them with their work. They are not taking Chinese as MT, but since their school does not offer their MT during regular school, they sit in the Chinese class. They also take tests and hopefully the school will let them sit for the exams next week.
Can anyone recommend a good Chinese tutor, especially someone who can teach using English. We live in Bt Panjang area. Can you reply to this post or pmail me?
Thanks a lot in advance.

CoffeeCat,
For one since she herself is a student, she's not able to handle them well, my ds especially can be a bit difficult when he is in one of his moods.
Also since I do not know the P1 curriculum,, I would prefer someone who is familiar with it. It was fine for Kindy as she used to teach them strokes and read books with them, but now there's spelling, HYPY etc which is a bit too much for my kids.CoffeeCat:

Hi Coffeecat,
The tutor (regardless of language) should be one teaching in a school who knows the syllabus.
A tutor who is a student will not be very dedicated since this person also has exams to study. Hanyu Pinyin is not easy to teach. -

It is very difficult to find a good Chinese tutor, many tutors have no idea what are the correct methods to teach Chinese. I would advise you to put your kids in Berries or Tien Hsia instead. They have been around for many years and they have a good syllabus and materials, and their teachers are all well trained. I saw a list outside Tien Hsia showing hundreds of students who obtained A/A* in 2009 PSLE Chinese, and about 15 of them are non-Chinese.
My kids used to attend the Berries at Woodlands, I highly recommend this branch. There is also a Berries at Bukit Batok but the waiting lists for weekend classes are very long. -

What is the difference between Berries and Tien Hsia? -

Well no matter how good the tuition center is,i think that it is the attitude towards studying.Maybe you can tell him the paradise of Sec School. When i heard about the facilities in Sec School,it really spurred me on to study harder as i want to get into that particular school.lurline:
i guess it's no interest. He always complained that it's boring and all his friends do not like chinese too.
if your child is the outgoing type, maybe could try those chinese enrichment classes that do speech and drama to cultivate his interest. In eduplus, they have classes under \"story island\" banner which let the children present the stories that they have read. I think it will make it interesting for the child as I have seen the P1s perform and they all seem to love it. Even the quiet ones will \"open up\" in the end. -
Can I just ask, the current P1 Chinese textbooks are all Higher Chinese?
