2018 P1 registration exercise for 2019 intake

Dear parents,


My son was balloted out from Punggol Primary (situated in Hougang) despite me living right next to it.
I was extremely upset and has been crying since 08 AUG ( yes i am that affected because i am a FTWM and has no care giver assistance thus school distance is very important to me).

To prep for phase 2CS, the next nearest school within 1km from my house is North Vista Pri NVPS (47 seats). Else it would be 1-2km range, such as Yio Chu Kang Pri YCKPS (115 seats). Not much choice left.

Should i go ahead in 2CS for North Vista? its like 700m away as compared to 1.2KM between NVPS and YCKPS.
I was thinking if the kids that were balloted out from Nan Chiau will spill over to NVPS?

Dilemma and worried.

What happened at Punggol Primary is truly a surprise, given that this school was at very low risk of balloting based on historical data.

My suggestion would be to go for North Vista in Phase 2Cs since you are < 1km away. It's hard to predict what are the alternatives for those who were balloted out of NCPS as there are so many other options in SK. Besides, a number of them could be living > 1km from NVPS.

I tried to open up the catchment for this zone and I almost fainted. It is very packed so its rather hard to predict the applicants in that way. Be nibble and set a threshold, once threshold breached, move to 2nd choice.

As you have correctly pointed out, MOE has already increased the number of places this year. Increasing some more isn't going to help for as long as number of applicants > number of vacancies, some people will go home empty handed.

To share the other side of the story...My Dragon nephew benefitted from the increase in places this year. SIL not aiming for branded school, just narrowed down to either of 2 schools within walking distance of her block in Compassvale. On the last day, checked the stats & applied at the safer school. All SCs all distances went in. Balloting was held for PRs. In her words, “If MOE hadn’t increased the seats by 30 at that school this year, SCs >2km would have to ballot.”

Imagine those with twins or triplets are considered as 1 slot...meaning the school actual intake may be slightly more than the indicated vacancies right? Just a desperate mum thinking out loud...

Twins take up 2 slots and triplets three. It’s only during balloting they are considered as one collective group hence only one chance. They still take up 2-3 slots if balloted in.

Twins will take up 2 vacancies. Triplets 3 vacancies and so on...

They only share 1 ballot ball when balloting.

Can’t share 1 table and chair even if they are conjoined twins!

And you can’t make the class size 31, not fair to the teacher or the other kids also.

The next best thing you can do (if u live just next to the school or just across the road), go and plead with the MP, MOE, waitlist staff...on the basis of your extremely close proximity to the school. Who knows, in future the rules will change to allocate based on meters to the school?

In the meantime, show your child your resilience & fighting spirit and plan your travel route to the backup school. Instead of modeling whinyness and stamping your foot at unfairness.

Focus on getting into a 2CS school. Dont limit your options. Priority is getting in w/o ballot, then re-strategise.


If doing transfer, ensure your child get good grades (its easier at P1 & P2 level)…

Writing to MOE doesn't help too. Worst is they didn't get the fact right.
Told them about my Punggol Pri(situated in Hougang) situation and they ask me to look at left over schools in Punggol area instead.

I was in a similar predicament 8 years ago. My DD1 was balloted out of NCPS, and when we went for AGPS in the supplementary phase, we were balloted out too as we were within 1-2 km. It was truly devastating at that point to be balloted out twice. We waitlisted and luckily, was offered a place in Dec right before school starts. Many unsuccessful with NCPS (and <1km) will spill over to AGPS since the 2 schools are only 1 bus-stop away. So make your choice wisely.

8 years on, both my DC have graduated from AGPS . Looking back, I have never regretted our choice. Both DD and DS have grown well and the school has given them many opportunities, which we are grateful for. But of course, hard work on one's own is key to having these opportunities.

Thank you for sharing your story! I hope it encourages the other parents here that even non-branded schools are capable of growing & nurturing our kids. Sometimes people hanker after the most popular school just because it’s popular. When all the other schools in the NE area can do a good job too.
