zac's mum:
Since 8 August, we've traipsed to schools like New Town Primary, Gan Eng Seng Primary, Bukit Timah Primary, Stamford Primary and Guangyang Primary by bus, MRT and walking. We dragged our twins around just to check out the surroundings and how to get to school safely.
Your best bet would be New Town Primary at Commonwealth MRT station with 131 seat left.
From Farrer Road MRT you can take bus 186 to Queenstown MRT. And take MRT 1 stop only to Commonwealth MRT. NTPS is just next to the MRT. Even linked all the way with shelter (except the last 2m or so).
Another alternative is Bukit Timah Primary but only 79 seats left. You can expect all the people balloted out from NYPS (+ HPPS + MGS + SCGS + PHPPS) will apply there if they’re driving their kids to school. It is possible to take public transport. You have bus 174 to Toh Yi Drive. But gotta walk quite far in, 650m unsheltered, to BTPS.
So now we are torn between New Town Pri (via bus) and Guangyang Pri (via MRT/Circle Line). Hence, the question I posed earlier, 'Would we be balloted out of 2C(S) too since we are more than 2 km away from these schools?' sigh.. -
Orb:
New Town Primary seems safe. I wonder if its convenient for you to travel via public transport.
Yup, by bus. -
pfactor:
If Bukit Timah does not work, I do agree New Town may be ano option. After u alight fr Commonwealth MRT, alight on the side where the sch field is & walk in their the field. There's a gate there.
We've tried taking the MRT to Bukit Timah Pri, the walk seems to be quite a distance. We don't drive hence walking distance is very important for us too.Estéema:
If u're just staying next to Farrer Road MRT Station on the Circle Line, U might want to try Pei Tong which is short walk fr Clementi MRT of Bukit Timah Pri if u've direct bus. Don't give up!
Gan Eng Sen is way off for you, even fr Redhill MRT as it's a long walk meandering thro the HDB blks.
Pei Tong is is only abt 5 min walk fr the Clementi MRT Stn & entry by side gate. It's sheltered all the way to school. Very nice quote environment. My g'frd kids all attended there till hubby quoted his investments & whole family moved to Australia last year. All 4 happy kids.
With MRT rides of 3-4 stops don't take more than 15 incl of changing at Bouna Vista Circle line to E-W. Farrer to Commonwealth is 7mins whilst Farrer to Clementi is 9 min. I bet it's faster than u walk Bt Timah Pri distance or drive thro morning jams. My son takes abt takes abt 15 min fr Bouna Vista to Newton changing at Botanic Gardens MRT.
All is not lost. -
pfactor:
on the last day of Phase 2C, see between New Town and Pei Tong, which one u do not need to ballot.
There are indeed lots of slots there but we don't stay in Farrer Park. It'd be easier if we did.
Pei Tong school is all right, left 107 seats, around (107/ 30 ) equal 3.6 P1 classes ==> perhaps SC need not ballot.
a)
from Farrer Road mrt to New Town primary
New Town primary : 131 vacancies
you can take 4 buses (93, 153, 855, 961), 6 bus stop reach (away)

If a school has about 100 vacancies for 2CS, usually SC 1-2km should not need to ballot? What do you think?
-
pfactor:
No one can answer that qn ahead of the final day of 2C(S). GYPS only has 96 seats left and will take the high spillover from those balloted out of CHS and ATS.

I still think your best bet is NTPS. If you don’t want to walk from Queensway bus stop across the road to the school, again I think bus + MRT 1 stop is the most comfortable to walk. From commonwealth MRT exit D, cut thru the blocks 89 and 90, that’s sheltered all the way to NTPS. Good for rainy days. And hot afternoons.
I used to live next door to that school. Many kids take MRT home, usually with their PRC grandparents.
The school building is quite new and big. Went inside & observed during the last elections when it was the polling station for my area. Bright and airy. I seem to recall that even their basketball court is sheltered so that the kids don’t have to play under the hot sun!
Side note: I am selling off my 4-room HDB there, once my tenant moves out. Keen to buy? Then your kids can wake up like 10 min before school and stroll into class heehee. -

100 vacancies .. is about 3.3 classes, left ?
is this Phase 2C Supp school, popular ?
If popular, usually reserve around 1.5 classes for SC < 1 km, plus reserve another one class for SC between (1 to 2 km) -
because Phase 2C Supp being the Last Phase before foreigner kids (Phase 3) pour in, many (SC and PR) balloted out at 2C : will be scrambling high and low desperately, for remaining vacancies. Nobody want MOE to allocate schools, for them.
beware -
On the last day of 2C Supp, after 3 pm, the number of Registration may balloon (soar) again.
So, to answer your question, Yes, usually SC (1-2 km) : need not ballot, if left around 100 vacancies. -
pfactor:
Oh I'm so sorry, I misread!

I’m sorry but I’m curious - is the school nearest to you Farrer Park Pri? I see they have many slots left so that seems like a viable co-ed choice still at Phase 2CS? -
phtthp:
Hopefully so. But this year is terrible. I'm so devastated after balloted out of our only choice <1km, the non-branded school just opp my house, which nvr needed to ballot <1km before. Now 2CS all left with 1-2km choices, scare to be balloted out again.Spottybamboo:

Pfactor, I agreed w Esteema's suggestion:
1. NTPS
2. Pei Tong Pri
Both are within walking distance to MRT stations & sheltered walkways to schools. Good for rain or shine. Their vacancies are still ample so you don't have to worry much about being balloted out of 2CS.
