The word aboriginal is only offensive in Australia context. This is a proper English term used widely around the world without any negative meaning. In Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan, the term \"aboriginal\" is a neutral descriptive word used widely to describe the natives. In parts of USA, \"Native American\" also has some negative connotation, so should everyone stop using \"native\" or get offended by it?

On the other hand, \"Bitch\" means a female dog in the formal sense. Calling people \"bitch\" is plain vulgarity all over the world, even if you are only saying it behind their backs. It means you are swearing that the other person is having sex with strangers just like female dogs, i.e. without moral values. This word is on same level as the most vulgar Hokkien word describing a female organ.

It’s most presumptuous of you to label the current P1 registration system as unfair and anyone who supports it as “immoral”. The current system is not perfect and could be improved but at the very least, there’s transparency and strict enforcement of the rules. Plus MOE has been listening to feedback to tweak it. Or is this just a red herring you throw out when you are losing the argument?

NYGH former principal was very open in encouraging students from neighborhood schools to apply for DSA, to extend of saying that neighborhood students will get higher priority. So in NYGH DSA selection, if there are 2 students of roughly equal caliber, the student from neighborhood school will stand a higher chance than the other student from well known primary school.

Words get around, and many of neighborhood top girls applied. Without DSA, many of these top girls from neighborhood primary schools would have chosen other schools (like Cedar, SNGS etc) during S1 posting, because their classmates are going there. As for the SAP primary schools' students who did not succeed in DSA to NYGH, they will still choose NYGH if they meet the PSLE cut off since their parents insisted so.

This, I think is the shrewd strategy of the former principal that partly propelled the school to the top (given that NYGH was consistently below RGS, RI and HCI just a decade ago). Of course with DSA much reduced since last year, this strategy will no longer work for other schools if they choose to emulate it.

for those P5 Top (Mainstream / Gep) girls coming from 100+ neighbourhood schools, who got selected (short-listed) by their own school Principal / Form Teachers from their own individual primary schools, to attend NYGH “special invitation” events, after P5 SA1 : usually, what is their chance of receiving a DSA (Confirmed Offer / Wait list), like ?

I did join the parents group when dd was in Pri school although I didn’t do it in Sec school.

Don’t think there was a special invitation by nygh to dd’s pri school.
The girl who got a CO from Nygh DSA-ed on her own accord, using CCA.
She got a t score of 260, merit for HCL, has the Edusave character award and is a student leader.
Without a CO - there is a possibility that she may not have met the COP of the school. (COP was exactly 262 for that year)
I do believe that the school is not short of DSA candidates who they know may be stronger academically but have made the decision to give the CO to her.

Don’t wish to go into the details but just want to say that imho, the school environment/ resources for neighbourhood pri schools can be quite different from the more popular pri schools.
Don’t wish to start another debate on who deserve the CO more, mainstreamer vs gepper etc too.
I believe those have all been debated previously in other threads.
DSA admission is all up to the school’s discretion.
There is no right or wrong,

Last but not least, If u like the school, just give it a try.
If u don’t, just choose something else.

Merit in HCL will be extra 2 points so makes her marks 262 as well, meeting the COP. Unless she missed by decimal places.

Yup, she could have just met the t score or she could have just missed it, since it is exactly 262.

No one knows what she will get for PSLE at the point of DSA, it’s not a sure get in via t score in her case although CO for other girls may be so, just that school wants more diversity.
The pri school is not a popular school, the percentage of students who made it to express stream is about 60+%, close to national average I think.

Just wanted to clarify the P5 Talent Development Camp by NYGH. Not sure if it is a new initiative or an ongoing yearly practice, but Daughter was invited for the camp through her primary school in May last year when she was p5. Up to 10 of her school mates were invited, a mix of geppers and mainstreamers. As to what criteria did we fulfil to be invited, it was not told but invitation is extended by NY through the primary school and the school select up to 10 high ability girls. I am thinking it could be a combination of p4 overall and p5 SA1 results but then again the geppers and mainstream take different exams. In the 10, there are prefects ,cca leaders, sports people , music people , very diverse.


The 2 day camp , u can select the domain u are interested for example maths , arts , music. Then during the 2 day camp from 8.30am to 1pm , it’s like the school and their students showcase their school’s program , there are activities to do , u get to chit chat to the teachers and take a look around the school. But that is basically it. There is no further follow up when u are in p6 during Dsa period. It is your choice if u want to apply NYGH Dsa but it’s through either sports or academics just like everyone else. Maybe I suppose u can mention in the interview that you experience NY culture through the camp ? But daughter had a good impression of the school since the camp but there are others who went and experienced it and felt it’s not a good fit for them. It works either way.

In any case , it’s like a mini open house to top pupils from primary schools in their p5 year? I guess a good strategy to get pupils to experience in depth what NY education is about. There was no pushy message to tell u to choose the school when u are in p6. I guess NY may have reasons for doing so, to reach out to top pupils to let them experience their school culture? We saw pupils from neighbourhood primary and SAP primary.

Hope this clear up the myth. Just like the RGS Dsa tea, does not mean you are invited means u get a CO, it’s for them to showcase their schools to selected students but you still apply the sports or academic Dsa and go through trials , selection tests and interviews like everyone else, it’s just the schools marketing.
