      Hi all,

My DD will be taking her psle next year as well! So far she hasn’t had Eng tuition but I find that there are times when I can’t really explain the grammar/s&t rules to her/correct her comprehension answers well when she does the past year papers. Wondering if I shd start her on English tuition. Any good recommendations for paper 2 English tuition? Thanks!

So far the best way to learn a language is to read widely. I used to read like 3 books daily and repeatedly beyond Primary Two. I remembered the small library we set up at Primary Five where I had problems understanding the Filing format but spent my entire 2 years there glued to the books. But be careful of being stuck to a language. I hated Chinese then but wished I knew enough to read 武侠小说 which I loved. So I hunted down English versions... 😉

Chief, after you had hunted down the Eng versions, did you transit to the chinese versions? I’m looking for a light at the end of my kid-hating-chinese tunnel 😓

Some parents feedback about their interest in compre and/or compo class so I've pushed ahead with this non-obligatory compre trial class. For full details, please head over to: https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=85&t=92344&p=1881030#p1881030

                【PSLE Chinese Weekly Preparation Group Class - 悦读理解会】(Nov/Dec 2018) - Trial Classes
Fee: FREE. Each child is entitled to a total of 4 trial lessons.

Venue: 266 Serangoon North Singapore 550266

                Dates: Mon 26 Nov 2018, Mon 3 Dec 2018, Mon 10 Dec 2018, Mon 17 Dec 2018

                Timeslots: 普华CL组 - 2:15pm – 4pm; 高华HCL组 - 4:30pm – 6:30pm

                Target Group: Primary 6 students in 2019 (i.e. 2018's Pri 5 students)

Max. capacity per class: 8 pax

                Registration via Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/153uvJNKPhNh0sEKPfRGWHTy67Zdojl-ABpHPDub5SrU

Why the focus on comprehension? That's because the skill set involved & picked up will be applicable across various testable components:
                - Reading of passage: Word recognition & pronunciation
                - Answering of questions: Works on grammar & sentence structuring
                - Analysation of underlying messages in passage & tackling of higher order thinking questions: Enhances critical thinking skills
Do you also know that the weight-age of comprehension sections in GCE O'Lvl CL Paper 2 is 85% (60 out of 70 marks) & 75% in GCE O'Lvl CL Paper 2 (60 out of 80 marks)? Equipping your child with the necessary skills to handle and tackle comprehension passages with ease and confidence will stand him/her in good stead in his/her journey of mastering the language and even embracing it's beauty. 🙂

Just to clarify some parent's doubt: It is not compulsory to attend all 4 lessons (you can select the dates your child will be attending in the Google Form) - although understandably, those who attend consecutive lessons will find continuity in learning and reinforcement of the skills and techniques taught. (Registration deadline for each lesson is 3 days before the lesson. Thank you.)

For those who are interested in the 2018 P5 SA2 picture compo tested across some of the schools:

Xinmin - Boy almost gets knocked down by car while trying to cross traffic light (driver didn’t realize green men was lighted, brake in time, got out to check if boy was alright)

Tanjong Katong - Boy saw suspicious character carrying bag (with tool sticking out), followed him, saw him trying to break into a house

Guangyang - Children playing soccer, one of time kicked the ball too hard, ball fell into canal, child climbed down to pick it up

ACS - Boy burn midnight oil, fell sick & was hospitalized, worried about missed lessons and school work, friends came to visit him & brought school work along.

(asking on behalf of a friend)

at end of P4, when choose P5 subject combination : parents decide (over-rule) what their child study, at P5.
eg. choose Standard / Foundation subjects, etc.

at end of P5 : they say that school has a final say, can over-rule what their child study, at P6 (PSLE)

recently, school had marked and returned my friend’s son P5 SA2 Higher Chinese papers … and he failed.
School advised him to drop Higher Chinese, next year P6. But my friend insists that her son carry on with HCL, into P6.
is he allowed to continue ? In the event he fail P6 SA1 HCL again next year 2019, means "bye bye to HCL " ?

Not sure if it’s an MOE requirement but at my DD’s school, we have been briefed the same I.e p4 to p5 - parents have a say, p5 to p6- school has final say. The requirement is that CL has to be 75 and above, and HCL gotta pass.

I asked dd briefly if she may be excluded fm hmt…she mentioned 75 oso but I m not sure, to me can take, take, cannot take then no need to take…I remember when we filled up the option form last year, hmt in P6 will be determined by school.
