Huh, have ah?lee_yl:
DD (sec 1) has been selected for MO training but she can’t make it on Mon (3rd Lang class) as well as Tue (day for the CCA she has chosen).
Her teacher’s advice is, give up MO training, but my daughter is keen to go. Usually what is the best way to go about this? Can appeal for a change of CCA to those that are held on Friday?
You can change 3rd Lang to another day. There’s a bus to MOELC on Wednesday.
There should be 2 classes for MO training. So can request for another day if clashes with CCA.
If MOLEC allows change of day plus transportation provided by school, it’s a good alternative. Will also ask DD2 to inform her classmates on that. Thanks! -

I was surprised to see that Biling kids are invited to do interesting activities like these. Huh, why never sign up for any of the above? It sounds fun to me. I urged my girl to go for this 猜灯谜 (4 lessons) but she said her Chinese standard not there, she really can’t.
Actually tbh, for her batch who dsaed via Bilingual, there are no compulsory program for them to take up. As far as I know, like Creative Writing, Emcee training, newspaper reporting etc those who are interested can sign up for it. My dd didnt sign up for all the above. My dd is developing well so far, but not under the Bilingual program. Lol!Ganjiongspider:

Oh mine! :scared: That’s a lot for me to digest right now.
I need to study thru one by one as I notice the way NYGH runs, it is so different from my DD1’s sec school.
Yesterday DD2 received an email to get her to select an activity under Talent Development Prog meant for those DSA via Bilingual. That was fast, I thought. DD2 picked Creative Writing. There’s also 猜灯谜, which she classified as “mission impossible”! :rotflmao:
From your post, I see that your girl is developing very well under the Biling Prog too, which reassures me.

I read that your girl was selected for the Humanities Talent Development Prog! Congrats! Hmm... Hard to say, my DD1 DSAed via Science but she now tells me she enjoys Literature etc more.
The other day DD1 asked me a million dollar question, subject A she can score well but no interest, subject B she has interest but can’t really score well. Which one should she pick for next year. I told her just be practical![/quote]
In terms of Bilingual - my dd is more inclined towards English language. So for Chinese, as long it is not compulsory, she will just make a miss lo. Haha!
As for the Humanities Talent Development Prog, she will only know if she will get into the final selection next Friday. Dd said that during the briefing, there's about 50 + students there. So, I guessed the Humanities Dept issued the Invitation letters to those students who are eligible, but even the students accept the offer does not mean they will get into the program. The letter explicitly states that the dept will select 28 students for this prog. So 28 out of 50+ - depends on her luck liao.
Actually I am a very practical mother. If dd get into final selection, wish her good luck. If she did not get in, then spend more time for those graded examinable subjects. Lol! :imcool: -

Reply from MOELC is pretty prompt.
Transportation on Wed is actually catered for upper Sec. Maybe you want to double check on that again as my DD is not taking the Wed bus this term. She is making way to MOELC Bishan herself via public transport. She is able to reach MOELC Bishan around 3.15pm even though sch lesson ends at 2.30pm (did grab a quick lunch in sch though). -

how useful, are these MO (Maths Olympaid) free training , in school ?
Not really. Last year, 5 out of top 10 in SMO Junior were girls. In fact, top 3 were all girls!
to what extent (degree), does this MO training equip the girls or prepare them for scholarship (in H2 Mathematics), or to take up H3 subject (Maths) at A-level, in Year 5 (Hwa Chong Junior College) later on, or for some other reason(s) ?
If from Year 1 (IP) onwards, up to Year 4 (IP) -
for those girls who had not (never) been identified for MO training by Nanyang Girls High, does it mean that their hope is dashed, ie. no chance ever to be selected by their class Maths Teacher offered study H3 Maths, and no chance ever for A-level scholarship (Mathematics) ? -

Your DD is superb. If my DD were to do the same (sounds quite rush to me) not sure if my lazy DD can sustain such a commitment. -

Lol, I can understand. My DD is also more inclined towards English. I was very worried for her initially. Scared she would cry or what.

However, after school started, she did surprise me with comments like, “Mom, there are so many calligraphy paintings on the library walls etc, very nice! Actually 繁体字 is beautiful.”
Huh... 28 is very few leh, compared to the school’s large intake. Doesn’t matter, being invited itself, it’s already an achievement. Your DD just started sec 2, I would think that along the way, she should have no problem picking up more such invitations/achievements. Keep up the good work and best of luck this Friday!

I don’t quite understand why this has happened, but I hope the P will address the spot-check issues that happened on Tuesday. I think some teachers took it in their own hands, and what they did was really unacceptable. They crossed the line from enforcing school rules to committing acts that violate trust and respect of human dignity. There were girls who later cried because they could not say no to the teacher and had no idea what to do. I’m not going to elaborate here, but those with girls in the school will know what I am referring to.

The parents and pupils are watching, let’s see how this is resolved
