      Hi sky and MommyNg,

I had asked one parent, whose child had dsa into NJC last year (2018 Batch, born 2006) under STEAM domain.

The mom (a forummer) clarified that her child was offered STEAM CO, last year (2018). The mom clarified that it wasn't offered Academic domain, last year (2018)

Perhaps, the format of the Tests structure differed this year, from last year batch, hence leading or causing people to think otherwise that STEAM actually started this year (2019), same time as the online DSA portal started
According to this set of slides (January 2018; see page 36), NJC did not offer DSA STEAM last year (2018).

      https://www.slideshare.net/mobile/frontierpri/fps-2018-information-booklet-for-parents-of-p6-pupils

Not sure if the slides are 100% accurate but I think it should be? As far as I can remember, NJC only offer CCA-related DSA (including art and music) for the past 2-3 years (?)

As for the case phtthp was referring to, either the claimed NJC STEAM CO is a NJC CO but not a STEAM CO, or it is a STEAM CO but not a NJC CO, or it is something else.... ? :scratchhead:

        Hi mommyNg,

When you said the date of the slides was dated \"January 2018\", are you refering to PSLE 2017 batch sat (born 2005),

        Not refering to

        PSLE 2018, born 2006 ?

Unless the slides were dated \"January 2019\", not \"January 2018\"

Anyway, this forummer's child did receive a CO from National Junior College last year (2018 batch). The domain was related to Maths and Science.

Not music. Not Sports. Not performance arts domain, related.

          On the slides...
Page 1 - titled briefing for P6 parents
Page 18-19 - listed exams dates for the year 2018
Page 21 - listed the school graduation lunch to be on 16 Nov 2018.

=> Therefore the slides were for those taking PSLE in 2018, those born in 2006, not PSLE 2017 those born in 2005.

Page 23 gave the list of participating schools in 2017 with NJC’s list on page 36. So unless this math/science domain was only added for 2018 NJC DSA later in the year. But then, I have 3 different friends who DSAed NJC in 2018, both said very sure don’t have academic domains, only CCA-related domains. So I don’t know why your forummer Friend said her child got a CO from NJC last year that is math and science related...

Maybe you can ask her specifically what domain her child’s CO was actually? Don’t just say “related to Maths and Science” lah.. is it Math, Science, Steam, or something else....?

            Hi mommyNg,

            I had found out, more.

This child, born 2006, had applied into NJC 2018 DSA, under Sports domain.

However, during interview, as the child shared about passion, interests, what had been done during spare, free time at home after school, the panel of interviewers discovered (realized) that this bright child, in fact have vision, have a broad, wide range of other talents too, and read widely too. They liked this child, because multi-talented, in Sports, in music, in stuff beyond Academic, etc

In the end, NJC did not offer this child Sports, instead counter-offer STEAM. This is a rare, unusual case. NJC decision-makers must have their reasons behind, why gave STEAM

Thanks phtthp for trying to find out more from the fellow forummer about this. I seriously wonder if a school can actually offer a CO to a child in a domain that did not exist at the time of DSA application. Sounds incredulous. How would the school account to MOE? MOE requires strict reporting from the schools. I don't think MOE would allow schools to suka-suka offer a CO from nowhere. Imagine if all schools do that, all hell breaks loose

School asking a child to switch from one domain to another domain after trials/interviews (e.g., applied Sports but asked to switch to Leadership), both domains officially available for the school, that I heard of. But offering a CO from a totally new, non-existent domain... err....

So sorry, without undermining the talent of the above child, I still don't believe this can happen (that a child was counter-offered a CO from a domain that did not exist) ... maybe some miscomms somewhere... :skeptical:

last year 2018, apart from Sports, what other domain are there, related to Maths / Science ?

cannot be only just one Sports domain co-exist

cannot say that STEAM doesn’t exist, because Maths and Science are merely 2 sub-domain (2 components) out of Total 5, under STEAM. The other 3 being : Technology, Engineering, Aesthetics

Hi, for ease of reference, according to FrontierPS’s information booklet for parents of Y2018 P6 pupils:

NJC DSA categories for that year:-
AEP, Basketball, Canoeing, Chinese dance, Chinese orchestra, Choir, Concert/Symphonic band, Cross country, Guitar ensemble, Guzheng ensemble, Indian dance, Music, Shooting, Softball, Squash, String ensemble/orchestra, Track and field, Western dance.

The booklet includes academic domains where applicable, cos under RI, we can find Mathematics, Science, etcetera, categories. Just fyr.

                    I see
                    Thanks sky, for clarification

I do understand mommyNg's view point too, from where she is coming from.

In other IP schools like this year 2019 Raffles Girls Secondary , DSA applicants may have initially applied for English academic domain. But in the end, RGS counter-offered the candidate \"Leadership\" CO, instead of \"English\".

Hence, counter-offer by the school panel of DSA interviewers, does exist.
In fact, wef 2019 this year, both RI and RGS started this new talent, \"Youth Community Leadership\". Last year (2018), this didn't even exist. So, 2019 \"Leadership\" is explicitly defined, as one of the talent inside RGS DSA listing, whereas this 2018 NJC \"STEAM\" was implicitly defined. Could be NJC felt that not enough suitable candidates, back then under \"STEAM\", whereas Sports DSA category (section) may have found enough suitable candidates already ? This was NJC school internal matter decision making, by the panel of interviewers, to decide which is the talent division that is \" lacking \" and in need, to \"park\" suitable candidates, that are a right fit to NJC school culture. Only in 2019, then NJC \"STEAM\" become explicitly listed.
