Cannot compare apples and oranges, and then say the pears are a better buy.
That's an exception. Last year was an exception in terms of cop for middle tier schools. NYGH have always been a school of higher cop than MGS. NYGH cop for affiliation is 250 MGS is 220 for their own girls from the primary. Your DD gets 250 n is from mgs pri where would u rather she goes? A homogenous school is better. Imo[/quote]
NYGH COP affiliation (250) is for IP whereas MGS COP affiliation (220) is for OP only.
In addition, NYGH is a through train to A Level whereas MGS is a IB Programme.
Here are the numbers for this year cohort:
MGS IP COP is 258 (no bonus for affiliation).
NYGH IP COP is also 258 (for non-affiliated students). However, a handful of NYPS girls will get in via affiliation at 250.
For last year cohort,
MGS IP COP is 260, NYGH IP COP is 264.
Going back another year,
MGS IP COP is 259, NYGH IP COP is 264.
I think calling MGS a middle tier school is a bit daft. -

Most people just ranked them by COP... Although that is also a problem by itself in trying to establish a big whatever number.
Could be because they are the first 4 schools that started the through train so they have more years of having people talk about them, and being longer in the program could mean the program is more established. If you really ask some of the p6 children why they want to go to these schools, many of them dont really know. Or like one of them told me, she just ranked the schools by COP in her 6 choices.
I hope people realise that a NYGH student can't get into RI even thought the student way exceed the COP, and vice versa

No need to get so touchy. As i said its my opinion. You are entitled to yours. I surround myself with 260s n 270s if im in that calibre n hence i rather not be with 220s if i have the choice. If you go to Mgs the cohort is diluted deny it all you want. Don't need to call names its not necessary.

Just bcos a school advertises its cop as 258 or whatever it is for a certain school for that year it doesnt mean that that is their official cop....that doesnt happen for the top 4 sought after schools. No need to get touchy n call names floppy. Its good to aim high no harm in that. -

NYGH COP 250 for affiliation is for their IP stream since in NYGH, there is only IP. But MGS has dual track so when the 220 COP for affiliation is for Express. Not IP. Their IP girls must enter via DSA or PSLE score of 258 and above.manorway\" post_id=\"1937045\" time=\"1569381449\" user_id=\"9303:

RI, RGS,NYGH, HCI ....the top 4.

I don't decide the big 4 . Its a historical thing. Im sorry for those of you who are so fiercely fighting the corner of MGS it is not one of the big 4 ie historically speaking. I'm sure its good enough in its own right but just not 1.of the big 4

Calling names? :scratchhead:
When is pointing out factual errors an issue of opinion?
I don't understand what you mean by that isn't their official COP... I mean those are their official, published COP. Sure, some students got in with lower COP via DSA or whatever... but that happens to all schools and official COP are a matter of records and what we go by.
Notwithstanding, I can totally understand the \"Please, get out of my elite uncaring face\" attitude and not wanting to mix with the peasants*. I vaguely remember a member here arguing last year that NYGH was 'diluted' because of affiliation whereas RGS was 'purer' (not the same exact words, but similar intent).
*Digress: coincidentally, was (re-)watching Lions Mum the other day and caught the episode about Durrani wanting her daughter, Nabilah, to have a study-date with people of her calibre (in this case, Hillary - Chae's daughter) only. As a result, she tries to siam her best friend (Jennifer) request to have her daughter (Ada) study and be inspired by someone better. I got a feeling that Mediacorp basically lifted their source materials from KSP

I have seen the slides the MGS Principal presented at their info talk for P6s few months ago. Actually, the performance of their O level track girls is nothing to shout about. It’s decent but I would say it is mid-tier.
The MGS IB track girls’ performance however, was quite impressive. They showed how their IB girls did after they went to ACSI and got the IB diploma.
I would say the MGS IB girls are of a high calibre, the same girls that would apply to RGS and NYGH too. -
I remember nygh cop for last year is only 258 not 264.
In any case… both are very good schools… though different curriculum that caters to different crowds. -

I think if comparing apples to apples, i.e. IP stream / non-affiliated only, the calibre of the IP students are of very high standard in these schools:

MGS - 258 to 271
NYGH - 258 to 276
RGS - 259 to 276
(I would also like to point out an oddity: CHIJ SNGS - 255 to 280)
Unfortunately, not all schools can do a NYGH and set a high COP for affiliated students. Schools like MGS and CHIJ have to stay close to their roots, missionary objectives as well as opening up opportunities for students who may be late bloomers, or less academically capable. Therein lies the difficulty in ranking schools. -

Well presented facts with no name calling.

220s will produce o level results that are nothing to shout about. Hence mid tier school for olevels. If you are in mgs pri n even get in the 240s i dont see you going back to your own pri school when you can be in a homogenous sec school that takes student in your league...
So similarly, unless you want to die die to do the iB if you exceed the cop or even if you are sitting on the cop, top 4 is where u would go you would at least try ur luck. Leave the mid tier for those in the mid tier. That's life. It may hurt but thats the way it is....
Floppy calling someone daft is calling names but im sure u choose to digress, yet again.
