My girl got the last qn on pattern correct. However I feel pattern qn should be removed entirely from PSLE exams. Pattern qns are such that sometimes you see it immediately and sometimes you just don't. Even as adults. During time constraints, when one is anxious, spotting a pattern may prove to be even more difficult. It is tough to get even partial marks when one cannot see the pattern, unlike other heuristic qns. Hence, I feel setters should test on things which require more of logical process thinking than one which requires strong visual perceptual skills.

It is not a IQ test, should focus more on mathematics.

why such an important, heavy weightage one big 5 marks question in 2019 psle, yet our Maths textbook don't even teach some concepts. Why ?

I share the same sentiment. When I was a child, I practiced very hard for the Math heuristic skills but regardless of how hard I tried, I just could not grasp the skill. It is not about working hard but how certain brains just can’t do it. To make matters worse, these kind of questions are always allocated high weightage of marks. Can the allocation of marks be distributed more evenly for various skill sets?

Ironically when I reached tertiary level, this Math problems didn’t concern me anymore. I was able to do subjects such as statistics and accounting very well. Then I realized that I was not “stupid” because I cannot deal with certain math concepts but I can deal with numbers in a different way.

Primary level exams are like getting past a certain phase. Whether those so called concepts are important in our later lives or applicable in real- situations or not? To me, not so. I guess this is why there are ‘late bloomers’ who excels later on when they have been given opportunities and exposure to what complement individual’s personal strengths. For a holistic education for our young ones and to make the new generation believes in themselves and possess confidence, our education curriculum still has a lot to be fine- tuned. No system can accommodate everyone’s needs after all. It is a great challenge.

I look forward to my child coming back later regardless how well she has done for Science today.

Actually pattern recognition questions were covered in my gals school syllabus way back in P4/5. I remembered it was in the onsponge book that was in the sch booklist. Don’t say about this pattern recognition question, past paper 1 questions on number pattern (ie 1,3,5,…,…) came out before in psle, this also seems like MO but nobody made noise then.

They are required to find nth term. So i think this set the foundation to prepare for secondary sch.

My analysis on why the hoo-ha over this year’s Maths paper which other years’ parents cannot understand as they weren’t given the full picture…
Q7 egg tart qn is a reasonable qn but it should be placed from perhaps Q10 onwards. Also one or two other qns in front which should have been placed after Q9. The sequence of qns is important during exams.

When the "tough" qns(in the eyes of the average kid) are placed in first 9 qns, they add to the anxiety and trigger a panic to the already nervous children. Then a vicious cycle occurs where they get panicky and cannot think well for further qns esp when they are working against the clock.

If the sequence of qns is such that the front 9 qns are "familiar my pals are here type of qns", the child gains confidence and they can handle subsequent qns better. That’s the difference between this year’s and previous years’ papers - the level of difficulty is not progressive.

Poor exam techniques. One question don’t know how to do, SKIP !!

Don’t stare at the question and spend all your time and energy trying to solve it. Move on to look at the other questions and get all the points that you can first.

DD1 suffered anxiety attack during her prelims maths paper so didn’t do well. It was then I realized I might have given her too much pressure/undue stress unknowingly. On the other hand, I was also glad that the anxiety attack did not happen during the actual psle.

2017 PSLE Maths paper , there was this “Ribbon question” I think more than half the cohort got it wrong. My daughter got it wrong too. After I assessed that question, it is not that hard just that she didn’t think carefully.
