2019 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2007)
-
Hi luxedream,
Yes, there is an Eligibility letter from Moe, that state "your child is eligible to study a HMTL at Secondary school …". This letter is given by Form Teacher last Thur (21 Nov), together with Psle results slip, inside the same stack
Perhaps next Monday (25 Nov), give a call to your Secondary school, ask if 2020 Sec 1 students keen to study HCL, what is the best approach advised ?
Meanwhile, during this year-end Dec school holiday, see if can attend any possible "bridging Higher Chinese" tuition lesson for your son, so as to catch up past 2 years (2018 P5 and 2019 P6) quite a fair bit of HCL work that’s been taught -

Went for q and a at ri. Hci will take him at 262 if he meets the cop.
Hi, just need some clarifications,
DS score 259 +3(HCL). His 1st choice RI (COP 258). 2nd choice HCI (COP 259)
If he is rejected by RI, will he be chosen for HCI based on 259+3 (262) or will other pupils whose score is 260 & 261 be given priority if they choose HCI as their first choice? Thank you 😊
Moe will post based on merit.
But if cop for ri is still 258, he should be able to get in.
I have a question too. What's the difference between hci and ri? My son has 260. I'm torn between hci and ri.
Do you have any information about both? -

Not my kids. Their friends.
2 hours! Now that's commitment for you.manorway\" post_id=\"1948364\" time=\"1574505897\" user_id=\"9303:
My kids have’ friends who travel for 2 hrs a day ONE way! Personally I think it is too much. When CCA ends at 7, reach home at 9. Sometimes the kids ended up taking taxi because they are too tired. A boy we know will do homework in MRT.
I think 45 min one way, door to door is max. It is really tiring as many still have to do homework after they get home.
I can't imagine that. I used to travel about an hour, on two busses to my own school years ago.
My kids’ travelling time is 40 min max which I think is also a bit long but manageable. -

Not just your daughter, every Sec 1 student also trying to adjust into Secondary school life, from 4 to 8 subjects.
Thanks for your advise.
But I am not sure how heavy the workload is and how demanding it can get. My girl is the eldest so I don’t have any benchmark in mind. And She isn’t keen to take up 3rd language. But of course, I am still trying to find out more before the deadline submission date. She has DSAed into IP track so my main concern is her ability to cope. Or should I encourage her to try out one term if there is no minimum period requirement?
Thanks so much for your time and advise.
Let your girl try out 3rd language, Sec 1 first. Take one step, at a time. Reach end of 2020 Sec 1 year-end later on, then decide want to continue or drop, still can. Don't worry so much. Everyone of us also adjusting, together with your daughter. She is not alone.
Sec 1 : no need tuition.
Let her study, manage on her own.
Sec 2 : streaming at year-end, may need tuition, in certain core subjects -

Realistically, I don't think it will go up by much. This year's ESIS cut-off is 261, which is just 1 point above last year's. I doubt it will fluctuate too much?
Based on the delta in COP between this and last yr, we can have an insight how much new facilities play a part in students’ (or their parents’) choices in Sch selection. -

We went to both RI and HCI before just to let DS have a feel of the environment. For me personally I prefer HCI while DS prefers RI. I think RI seems to have a wider spectrum of subjects offered. U can check the S1 book. -
Luxedream:
Hi, some IP schools require you to produce MOE's eligibility letter (the Chinese teacher in fact photocopied it to keep as reference...) in order to take up Sec HCL; some IP schools conduct a qualifying test to give you a chance even if you are not MOE-offered but are interested; while some (Express) schools simply let you take it even if you are not eligible + without a need for any qualifying test. So, check with your Sec school MT department, cos policies can be updated regularly.
...eligibility to take HCL will be stated in the letter together with eligibility for 3rd language. But we don’t see anything that mentions HCL in the letter. Does it mean DS is not eligible? -

Both are independent boys schools with IP. HCI is SAP school, so HCL is compulsory, and almost 100% of the boys are Chinese. RI is not a SAP school, so it is multi-racial.
RI emphasises on leadership. HCI emphasises on entrepreneurship.
Both the schools will open an “O level class” if there are students who do not qualify to continue IP in Sec 3. For the past 2 years, RI did not open any O level class, HCI have.
All the best with your application. Both are excellent schools, you can’t go wrong with either one. -

during today's open house the student for our guided tour mentioned it is the shared canteen for both primary and secondary but with different recession time.
SCGS primary school canteen section, is combined together with the Secondary school section canteen, making it very big ?lee_yl\" post_id=\"1948379\" time=\"1574508982\" user_id=\"17023:
Today my DD1 went to help out at SCGS open house. DD1 said it was packed with people. Many thronged the newly opened underpass from
Steven station right into the school. Everyone was curious about new school facilities / new expansion building and whether the sec and Pri share the same canteen etc. No one asked about the curriculum, lol.
