Those returning by tomorrow will not be subjected to the SHN...their children will still attend school and enrichment classes đŸ€·

refer point #4, especially the bold & underlined part

      https://www.moe.gov.sg/news/press-releases/schools-and-kindergartens-to-re-open-with-enhanced-precautionary-measures

      4.

To further protect the education system, MOE, MSF and ECDA will implement additional precautionary measures over and above MOH's measures.

As some have travelled overseas during the March school holidays, we will issue a 14-day Leave of Absence (LOA) to students and staff of schools, preschools and student care centres who have been out of Singapore on or after 14 March, which is the start of the March school holidays.

      =================

This means that any parent who have brought their children out for overseas holiday trip, on the start or beginning of the 14 March holiday [Saturday] during this one week holiday break, after returned back home to Singapore,

the student cannot come to school starting Term 2 next Monday 23 March.
Student must stay at home for 2 weeks, LOA

Schools will issue these students / parents LOA, SHN stay at home notice

They dont care when u come back to Singapore, from your holiday overseas.
As long as students & family had departed out of Singapore, from this Saturday date 14 March 2020, means
must go on leave for 2 weeks, starting from next Monday Term 2, 23 March

That teacher I knew, she took one day leave and flew off before March Hol (14th March) started!
Not a little credit. I think it’s a big credit.

Without Wuhan locking themselves down right before æ˜„èż, it could have been 10 times or 100 times worse.

Agreed. Without China setting the precedent of decisively locking down, things may have been a lot worse.

China has to take the blame for the worldwide pandemic, as it started there, and they tried to suppress its visibility early on. This will happen again as wet markets are rife in South East Asia, and involve key vectors: buyers, sellers and other supply chain merchants - listen to this report https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7nZ4mw4mXw
By blaming China, does it help the current situation? It’s like blaming Western countries for the AIDS pandemic which killed more and has been around longer. Be objective, the situation could be much much worse had China not responded so aggressively with the lockdown of Wuhan and Hubei province

Time gained could have been put to good use by governments worldwide but many just let the golden opportunity slip

I find it sad that when it was an Asian epidemic no one seemed overly worried but when Caucasians started dying then the whole world got worried to the extent of being irrational.

School closures by themselves - would it be useful?
Probably need to couple with stay at home advisories - otherwise large groups of kids, instead of being in school where some social distancing can be enforced - they are milling around in fast food outlets or malls or public libraries etc - i don't think it will help much in containing spread.

All shopping malls shut down for 2 weeks except for supermarkets and pharmacies. Maybe we can’t imagine that happening but this is what is happening in many countries right now.

Friend told me, those undergrad returning from overseas, many of them have siblings in local schools! One school teacher I knew, flew overseas during March Hol, I am not sure whether she returned before or after the SHN dateline kicked in.

shut down activitties/ retail / entertainment in week ends? except essential services :food supermarket, medical etc
the teens still go out during sch holidays - to sch for extra class, own initiated cca . class activities etc !
Italy gov not strict enough in locked down of cities, this cost thousands lives - many deads have no proper funeral

Those with sons & daughters of Singapore can register with MFA for special flights back to SG.

Your child(ren) can contact the Singapore High Commission in London or you can register online for the special flight home.

                  https://form.gov.sg/#!/5e70f0487ae7d300113ef1b4

Please share if you have any fellow Singaporeans (citizens and PR only) students in UK looking to return home:

                  Dear Singsoc leaders,

We understand that many Singaporean students are trying to secure flights back to Singapore. We have struck an exclusive ticket arrangement with Singapore Airlines for you to travel back to Singapore from 19-31 March 2020, subject to availability. We are offering this facilitation to students first as the rest of the Singaporean community based here are more rooted and have other support.

Singaporean students (citizens and PRs) may register your interest at go.gov.sg/flyinghome2020 and refer to the detailed instructions within. Singapore Airlines will get in touch directly with you. Singapore Airlines will do all possible to contact you at least 24 hours before your allocated flight, and will reach out with more lead time wherever possible. Once ticketed, Singapore Airlines reserves the right to rebook your travel on an alternative flight due to operational contingencies. This special arrangement with Singapore Airlines is exclusively for Singapore citizens and PRs. Entries/expressions of interest by non-Singaporeans will be treated as void.

Your safety is of utmost importance and rest assured that the Singapore High Commission in London is looking into getting additional flights if there is high unmet demand, including for further arrangements in April.

Singapore Airlines has advised that if students wish to return urgently, they may proceed to Heathrow Airport T2 to standby for a flight on the day itself. However, Singapore Airlines cannot guarantee that they will be accepted but there is a chance that Singapore Airlines will have some seats available. In such a scenario, you should preferably not have already put in a request through this system as we would like to avoid duplication and clogging up the system. We seek your understanding and cooperation to ensure the smooth operation of this system we have put in place, which we would fine-tune as necessary.

Please stay in close touch with us, monitor your health, and continue to stay united as one Singapore community! #SGUnited

milk powder, cooking oil or olive oil fly off the shelf, in US supermarket

                    https://www.news18.com/news/world/people-have-gone-crazy-americans-wake-up-to-coronavirus-panic-as-milk-bleach-fly-off-shelves-2537157.html

Honestly, during the frenzy buying, I find Singaporeans orderly and did not cause any public nuisance.

I saw a video of two Australian aunties slapping each other over toilet paper at the supermarket. In China, one lady dragged a sack of rice while another cried and sat on it.

For the videos from America, very weird to see that some just buy a whole trolley of fresh milk ONLY and another one bought a whole trolley of fresh eggs and NOTHING ELSE. I mean, won’t these expire in 2 weeks time? Sorry to say my impression now is that average Americans are not just obese, their IQs also....

I accidentally liked your video. Where did you get your insight on USA stereotypes. I went to USA last year, I did not think they were all obese or of low IQ - having travelled east coast to west coast. The percentages were no different than any other country - seems 36% in US are obese, like a majority of the world. I used the credible source to inform my judgement: https://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/obesity-rates-by-country/

These are trying times, and an unprecedented situation we live in. I do not begrudge bulk buying; I do agree panic buying is irrational. When I go bulk buying shopping, it’s for the essentials for my elderly father, his elderly neighbours and then my family.

Swissotel, Fairmont, Furama, Genting are some of the hotels I know that are in MOM's list of designated lodgings (aka corporate rate negotiated by MOM). There are smaller ones in Geylang too for the SMEs. Malaysian PRs and Malaysian workers cannot stay in a 8-bedder hostel. They must have a proper twin- or triple-bed room according to the hostel association. This is because they are sort of used to staying in spacious terrace houses in JB. They are not like the PRCs who are used to bunking in barracks. That is why we have to splurge on 4/5-star hotels to persuade the Malaysians to stay in SG for 14 days. And some angmoh MNCs also gave each of them $20/day allowance, as they need to eat at SG foodcourts (e.g. at Raffles City below Swissotel).

Though we're grateful for their sacrifice, we must wake up to the fact that we are over-dependent on Malaysian workers. In particular, this lockdown has exposed our SMEs' over-reliance on Malaysian workers and SPR workers. Imagine what the new Msian govt will do in future, if they need to squeeze our 4G ministers ?

It's disturbing to know that so many Malaysians are working in our ESSENTIAL SERVICES. How can SG allow ourselves to be potentially held ransom by the Malaysian govt? They will cripple our essential services by extending the lockdown and bankrupt us because you have to keep them here for a longer period. Phase 1 = S$210mil burnt on the hotel/hostel subsidy to SMEs and GLCs. Extended Phase 2 = S$ x million ??

The new PM knows he cannot eradicate the spread in 2 weeks, because we're looking at a 16k-pax event + contacts.

So many of them are in public transport, fire dept (I guess), auxiliary police (those serving quarantine orders and guarding the GFQs at night I guess), LTA officers, healthcare (at least 1k in our private hospitals and clinics), some in cleaning services, security guards (those doing night shifts at Condos, Factories and Office Buildings while the Singaporean security guards are sleeping), facility mgmt. services and logistics.

I don't know how to solve this problem as no Singaporeans want to be in these jobs, and I'd rather hire Malaysians to be in these key essential services jobs than PRCs and Bangladeshis, as we have seen those PRC bus captains striking some years ago.

Hope there'll be some retired workers (e.g. nurses) from these sectors on standby in case those Malaysians, who are currently enjoying their 5-star stay here, start to miss their children and spouses in JB, and opt to return with no pay leave for the extended lockdown period. When Malaysia's healthcare system is burdened by more spikes in the coming weeks, we must be mentally prepared that they might ''recall'' (i.e. bar exit) their skilled healthcare workers serving in SG hospitals.
