Our piano tr is particular abt how foot press and release, on pedal too.
Ok I never thought about background noise.zac's mum\" post_id=\"1968717\" time=\"1585261443\" user_id=\"53606:
I think the issue may be that most families put their pianos in the living room, which is not an enclosed space. There’s plenty of background noise. And if you believe the adverts out there, they expect families to use regular iPads for the video call. There’s no special microphone. That’s nowhere comparable to the sound quality of recording in a soundproof studio.
Remote teaching, can spot and rectify any wrong notes, but at higher levels, teacher also help correct the expression and articulation. How can the teacher hear accurately whether the student has done a diminuendo or not? Or whether the pedal has been stepped on/lifted off for the appropriate length of time? Teacher needs to see the foot not just diagnose from the length of the sound of the sustained note.
But I accompanied DS in every piano lessons until he finished grade 8 (because he was only P6 so I still needed to remind him of teacher’s feedback) and never once I saw the teacher need to see his foot and DS got perfect and near perfect scores for all his pieces. If your DS’s teacher needs to see your DS’s foot, maybe you need to change his teacher? DS was at M too but his teacher had left M.
Unless our equipment is like those music recording studio, the sound produced from online cannot compare. Hence not everything can use online lesson to replace for musical instr. -

Mine is a private tr, so no issue for me. Mine uses own hand to play on kids hand to show the touch required at times. Many other methods which I shld not disclose here. Every tr has their own trade secrets.
There are some piano teachers in this forum so maybe they can give their opinion. I still think it is possible with higher grades. The lower grades ones are the one that are difficult to teach over internet because they don’t know what to do, no interest, no attention, etc :frustrated:6thisnthat9\" post_id=\"1968723\" time=\"1585269825\" user_id=\"145858:
Yes. I watch my dc higher grade piano lesson every week, private tr allows, for one, the fine tuning of playing pieces part is high quality teaching, not possible to be converted online. Imagine, I don't learn music at all, I can tell the difference. those who learn music, the drop of pin on the floor may means a world of difference...
The starting of a new piece, finding better fingerings and spotting wrong notes, OK.
For kids w no interest or motivation, prob would be the same even if tr sit right next to child. I believe, any online lesson would need some support from parents at home, for pri sch kids at least. But for lower grade, the focus is to play correctly, timely. Fine tuning is required too but the degree of it is less. -

there are toddlers that start learning how to play piano aged around 4 year old or kindergarten age 5 yo onwards, because these parents plan to use music to apply DSA into Secondary schools later on when they reach PSLE year, so they start out very early.
But if your toddler at such a young age is unable to sit still, like to walk here, walk there, or kiddo like to make a lot of noise, chit chat cannot focus, unable to concentrate, do Not signup for online piano, because Not suitable for these toddlers. You know your own child best, esp. if u happen to have twins that made a lot of noise during piano lessons at physical premises, fidgeting here & there, cannot sit still, run here, run there, attention deficit kids / children, causing distraction to others. These kids are too young, to understand the meaning of \"online\" -

not just ballet, my friend's son ABRSM music exam too.
My girl ballet class and exam postponed. But school giving free online weekly class. So that they don’t forget their moves.
Those students who intend to apply DSA into Secondary schools, via music, could be impacted too
eg. P6 students sitting for next year 2021 PSLE batch that's rolling out the new AL PSLE system -
I think this year DSA might be impacted because even SYF is postponed. P6 might not be able to participate if it’s nearing PSLE.

For DSA, they need to rely on past years' achievements + coming May Mid-year exam results, if 2020 SYF [Singapore Youth Festival] or Sports games meeting, etc are postponed / cancelled -
Actually, using grade 8 by p6 to DSA via music is thing of the past. Nowadays, very rare. Yes ABRSM music theory was postponed.
