Our Moelc teacher is switching to Google Hangouts.MOE suspends use of Zoom in home-based learning... Gonna explore Google Meet as an option.
It is an easy Google app to include (on the Chrome browser for instance), But you need to First create a Google account... And, Hangouts has more restrictions (e.g. to test out functions, you need unique email addresses/ phone numbers). Certain functions are unavailable on the mobile app as well, so it becomes more necessary to use Hangouts on a laptop/ desktop. Though so, Hangouts does have entire screen share + application window share tools (same as Zoom); but I don't find a whiteboard (which Zoom provides)...
My P3's tuition centre uses Zoom, which I feel is fine since meetings are password protected; otherwise my other school kids have always been working on Google or Microsoft platforms, so are not impacted. -

If the group is small, the host can screen each attendee before allowing the person to join the meeting by using the waiting room feature (it is now on by default, but do check when you schedule a meeting).

Very helpful! Thank you so much!! :goodpost:
If you know of students needing tutoring support during this HBL period, try:
https://covidtutoringsupport.weebly.com/
It is an initiative of a bunch of university students who are offering free help for secondary and JC students who do not have access to private tutoring or online tutoring.
[I am not involved in this at all. Just passing on the word.] -

Hi, Google JamBoard works as well as the Zoom whiteboard feature - I can paste graphics, write, highlight, etcetera...google jamboard for the whiteboard
And, Google Hangouts' application window share works well; but, my entire screen share was jumpy, plus, I could not invite successfully using email addresses (Google accounts', so I generated a link & WhatsApp webbed instead). Hmmm... I think our teacher may get a bit of a headache getting ready for the next teleconference... -
Google Jamboard is easy and fun to use!

Any recommendations for an affordable laptop for the kids to use for HBL? And where to buy online with delivery provided? Eg Challenger/Courts?
I’m getting very irritated with having to share my work laptop with my kid. Zoom conferencing does not work well on DH’s Mac OS desktop. Some teachers don’t give choice of timing & clashes with my peak work timing.
Also, anybody have the link to the govt announcement of the special grant to employers to implement/facilitate WFH arrangements during this time? I want to claim reimbursement from my employer for a proper work laptop with bigger screen. -

We have bought our most recent laptops from Challenger because it gives an extended warranty. My entire family are using ASUS laptops at the moment, some of us on our 2nd ASUS. So far, it has proved to be a value-for-money choice - not the cheapest, but cheaper than some \"better\" brands, and they have served us well. I believe they should have delivery, though we usually self-collect. For a younger child, just choose something basic, I guess.
Yes, sharing computers during the work day is a pain. Our kids have had their own laptops since Grade 7 when they started internet school (overseas), and HBL is the same kind of thing.
