SMPS rarely (probably never) ballot for SC. Not many would have applied for PV.

Any reason why is the school unpopular, other than the temporary move? I believe the return to original site will be delayed due to the construction disruption during CB

Yes being the oldest girls school in SG with so much history… The PSLE cop isn’t super low either. Why not much hype over this school?

It may not be obvious on a 2D map, but the original site is located high up on a steep hill. There are no bus stops nor MRT station within walking distance. How can the girls get to school other than school bus or daily car chauffeured by parents?

Besides that, there are hardly any HDB flats nearby (other than Tekka, Jalan Besar old flats, with hardly any young families)…there are several small condos but I don’t think many Singaporeans live there…

The psle score won’t be super low because the school original location captures one of the most expensive residential estates in River Valley and Orchard. The parents can afford high enrichment fees. if the average score is not comparatively impressive , it could be the school focuses more on character development. As a Mission school, this is reasonable too. That’s just my guess

Expensive neighbourhood but does the school spell rich kids to you?

I believe the school is good but just curious why people who choose it are like those living in Punggol, SK, out of the way trying to get there?

Smps are more relaxed and parents are pretty chill, only a small handful are kancheong. Parents profile are mixed bag, slightly skew towards private condo than hdb due to location. Most parents choose SMPS because they prefer a more ‘balanced’ school, it is not as competitive as SAP or elite school along Bukit Timah. The school does not glorify on academic achievement or competition. Academic standard wise I think it is slightly above average - English standard should be pretty high and most girls read pretty well for their age but Chinese standard is lower. Maths standard are not high through observation on Maths Olympiad results and schoolwork. The school focuses a lot on character development and my girl enjoys going to school.

Thats good to know, seems like very holistic! Can you share why you decided this is a right choice of school for your girl?

I feel like both St Margaret and Paya Lebar Methodist Girls are quite similar in terms of reputation and academics. They are both above average, and also have affiliated secondary schools, religious, holistic, same gender… Just different location. Both are also not hard-hard to get / ballot in. May I know from you parents, what are the main differences between both schools? And why would you choose one over another? Thanks for insight!

If you are looking at long term prospects for PLMGS, do note that PLMGS Sec is affiliated to Anglo-Chinese JC (ACJC) to enjoy 2 discounted points.

Year 2020 JC cut-off points to ACJC is 8 points (Science stream) and 9 points (Art stream).

Below are the names of secondary schools affiliated to ANGLO CHINESE JUNIOR COLLEGE:

ANGLO-CHINESE SCHOOL (INDEPENDENT), GEYLANG METHODIST SCHOOL (SECONDARY), PAYA LEBAR METHODIST GIRLS' SCHOOL (SECONDARY),
METHODIST GIRLS' SCHOOL (SECONDARY), ANGLO-CHINESE SCHOOL (BARKER ROAD), FAIRFIELD METHODIST SCHOOL (SECONDARY)

If you are looking at long term prospects for SMGS, do note that St Margaret Sec is affiliated to St Andrew’s JC (SAJC) to enjoy 2 discounted points.

Year 2020 JC cut-off points to SAJC is 10 points (Science stream) and 11 points (Arts stream).

Below are the names of secondary schools affiliated to ST ANDREW’S JUNIOR COLLEGE:

                      ST. ANDREW'S SECONDARY SCHOOL,
                      ST. MARGARET'S SECONDARY SCHOOL,
                      CHRIST CHURCH SECONDARY SCHOOL,
KUO CHUAN PRESBYTERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOL, ANGLICAN HIGH SCHOOL,
                      PRESBYTERIAN HIGH SCHOOL,
                      ST. HILDA'S SECONDARY SCHOOL

For primary 1 registration, it is more challenging to register the girls successfully in PLMGS for Phase 2C as compared to St Margaret for Phase 2C. Phase 2Cs will still have vacancies at St Margaret Pri.

Simple reason: 1) No ballot required and pretty close to home 2) wide range of Cca activities to choose. Ideally I prefer slightly stronger academic focus school, but SMPS is good enough with Strong character development. I do not want to stress myself out and not keen to send her to expensive TLL just to keep up in a competitive environment.
