      beeb:
Thanks Mum2One for your most sincere sharing. My concern with Ortho-K lenses include the one u are facing with your child, the difficulty of using and maintaining of the lenses... what if the child feels and starts rubbing his eyes in his sleep? Read about the risks of infection and cut/abrasion to the cornea by the hard Ortho-K lenses, thus is hesitant to put son on it...

I fully acknowledge the difficulties/demands urban kids r facing, leading to the increase in myopia. My priority now is to help my son control the progression to the minimal till he reaches his teens, when his myopic reading stabilizes.

Inquired with an eye clinic in Mt Alvernia Hospital tt runs a children myopia control program with the eye drop thing. According to the clinic optometrist, the 100+ kids they have seen over the past few years had achieved remarkable results. Most of the kids had ZERO increase in their myopic power after the 1st year and only a mere increase of 25-50 degree after the 2nd year in the program! Made an appointment with the clinic 1st week of Jun. Shall see how things go as hubby and I continue to press on in prayer for help from above.... 🙏

Appreciate if you could continue to update on development with your child on the Ortho-K lenses. :thankyou:
Hi beeb, my ds is also in the Myopia Control program. We have exactly same concern as you with regards to Ortho K option; our concern was made worst as ds also have very sensitive eyes. He constantly has scratches all over his eyes due to intense scratching. The concern was also confirmed by the optometrist when we went down to the a ortho K shop mid last year. As the optometrist also worked in National eye centre, he recommended us the Atropine option. We didn't take up the option immediately as it was too new to us. After taking some time to read up, instead of going to National eye centre, we went to dh's eye dr in Mt Alvernia.

Ds just started the program this year, as this is a long term programme so we are still not sure how things will go yet. But one thing for sure, his eye sensitivity is also being treated at the same time. So no more intense scratching and hence no more scratch marks over his eyes.

        Hi

My ds2 is 3.5 yr old. I have observed that usually his eyeballs will tilt to the side of his eyes if he needs to focus on something.

I’ve discussed with the GP before and he said that 3.5 yr old will be too young to go for eye checkup and he suggested maybe wait until past 4 yr old.

I am just concerned and thinking of sending him for a check up. Can I just go directly to KK Eye Centre for a 1st time check up for him or should I go to a polyclinic first ? Thanks.

          Hi Hifive,

If I am not wrong, if you go to polyclinic for referral to KK Eye centre, you will be able to enjoy subsidized rate versus going to KK Eye centre for a direct appointment. However, subsidized patients tend to have a longer wait for appointment date.

Why don’t you call KK eye centre and enquire? If you are concern, better act early.

                    phantom:
Maybe the lack of eye exercise is the cause of myopia, need to frequently shift focus between near and far view, suppose that helps to relax the eyes. Heard looking at green trees also helps to prevent myopia. Not sure how true that is

                    Hello,

I'm new to this forum. Perhaps I should share some of the things my family do that could have inadvertently helped to maintain my kids' eyesight.

They drink fruit/vege juice twice a week since young. Carrot+Celery+Apples. Carrot good for eyes, celery removes phlegm and lowers blood pressure and apples good for many many things. It's a juice for all in the family.

They do alot of outdoor activities that make them focus far. This helps to counter the near focus from reading. They do read alot.

The fastest way to damage the eye is playing with all those computer gadgets and staring at computer screens. The glare is terribly damaging to the eyes.

These have worked for them. My dd p4 is 6/9. My son started off p1 with 6/9. At p5 improved to 6/6. Now sec1 improved again to 7/6.

Never heard of 7/6 but the nurse told him his eyesight is better than normal. I still don't know how it's possible. I guess it my kids lifestyles that helps.

                      Hi

Sent my DS2 to the KK eye centre today for assessment.

Result is that he has astigmatism of 50+ on the right eye and 120+ on the left eye. He is only 3.5 yr old. Doctor prescribed glasses and told us that he needs to put it on when see things afar. Ask why he has astigmatism and doctor said that it was due to the shape of his eyeballs.

                      My concern is :
                      1. at the age of 3.5 yr old, his eyes are not fully developed, am I right? the doctor said that it’s more or less developed.

                      2. should I get a second opinion? any recommendation?
                      3. at this age, very concern that he is too young to handle glasses especially going to school. Any advice from parents ?

                      Thanks in advance.

My son was also diagnosed with astigmatism when he was 3+ (each eye abt 200 degree). He has been wearing glasses for almost a year at all times. It’s better to let him wear glasses if the doc advise. Otherwise it may become lazy eye.
