Hihi, knowing her, I believe she is worried for both. she thinks and believes she didn’t do well in general for CA3. But of course, she says no one in her class knew what the average benchmark was. From day 1, they were told that IP pass is 60%. So from her perspective, she is at borderline. Furthermore, to get into SCGS, the girls are usually at least above average in their primary school, which means their average percentage is 85% and above. As such, to my daughter, she sees it as a tremendous drop in results, although she is aware that the number of subjects she has to do now is much more.

She is also worried about not having enough time for revision. I am trying to help her understand and analyse open ended questions but I think she worries too much that nothing gets to her. Hoping for the best..

Hi, time passes so quickly. The EOY exams is starting real soon. My gal is starting to feel stress preparing for exams.

Why?

Because she didnt do well for CA3?
Is she worried about promotion or worried about not getting all As?
Or is she stressed because she doesnt understand the lessons?

I think you should find out the causes of her stress in order to help her.

I am not in any SCGS IP parents chat group. I didn’t know there was something like this.

perhaps, you may want to join your own IP class parents' chat-group, so that can touch base with fellow like-minded Secondary Year 1 parents, on common ground interests, similar educational discussion issue (topic) ?

You may approach your daughter's class Form Tr, if she is currently already an enrolled pupil, studying inside SCGS. Form Tr can help to connect you with the relevant designated Parent-personnel-in-charge, of the parents whatsapp group.

In Secondary schools,
normally there are 2 type of parents' chat group, can join.

1) at the entire IP level

That means,
since there are four IP SCGS classes, parents from these 4 IP classes, can join the parents' chat group, so that anything of concern regarding IP topic, across entire level, all parents inside the loop, stay alert.

2) at the individual class level.

That means, any happening of concern inside your own IP class, you can stay updated, in tune
Hi, may I know if SCGS have dual track? I prefer my child to sit for O levels and have the option to choose between JC or Poly later. Thanks

Yes, they have both O and IP, interestingly both cut-off points the same

Thank you. My girl would want to apply for all girls school (offering O levels) and SCGS is closest to home with one straight bus.
With no open house this year due to covid19, it will be hard to learn more on the school. Need to read up from page one of this thread.
Any idea how many malays (roughly)? Less than 5 I guess?
Hi, my kid is in Sec 1 this year and you're right, there are 4 malay girls in the cohort. Hope this helps.

Hi, time passes so quickly. The EOY exams is starting real soon. My gal is starting to feel stress preparing for exams. I didn’t know how to help her because she is my first born and I didn’t have friends with kids in SCGS IP track. So I am hoping to get some help from this forum.

My girl had gotten an average overall score of 78% for her CA1. But I Guess that’s because it was still the honeymoon transition period from Primary School and as such, the test papers were relatively easy.

I have seen my girl doing her homework conscientiously and revising for her tests. Nonetheless, for CA3, her grades dropped. I did an estimated calculation of her average score and I think it should range from 67% to about 72%. I am not sure but does this means she isn’t coping well? Or she isn’t revising effectively? I don’t know the average score for her class but I heard that there are girls failing a few subjects.

In subjects like History and Geography, how do I help her in preparing for open-ended questions? I can’t remember the terms used. For History, I think it’s SBQ and SEQ.

If someone with experience can share with me on how to help my child prepare for End of Year exams, I would really appreciate that. She tried requesting for past year papers from the seniors but didn’t managed to get any. And she told me she couldn’t find them in the library either.

I am feeling anxious and a bit stress that I couldn’t be of much help at the moment.....
Hi chujoe,

I hear you. I'm beginning to think that I've slightly underestimated the prep and work that needs to go in to the EOY exams.. my girl is in Sec 1 IP and although the workload has increased from when she was in pri school last year, she has been coping well with the load and hasn't shown much signs of stress until just very recently last week and today when she was visibly upset that she hasn't completed all her assignments.

I reached out to her form teacher by email to keep an eye out for her, which she did today and I was appreciative.

I will be trying to communicate with her more during these next few weeks to see if I can help her more in how to cope and manage the exams. All the best!

Hi there, yes! Same here! My girl was struggling to get her assignments done and has been working till late night. Fortunately she managed to sleep slightly earlier this week.

She has been going through her notes, doing her revisions etc but she is telling me she is far from being ready for EOY... quite worrying.

I hope your girl is coping the pressure well because coming week is the real battle. I believe she will because she has a supportive mum. 😊

Hi,

to all SCGS Higher Chinese (gao-hua) students
(whether from IP or from the O-level dual- track),

need to clarify something, hope you don't mind.
Thank you, for your valuable precious time.

Throughout your 4 years studying inside SCGS, from Sec 1 to 4,

did school SCGS ever ask you to buy the Standard Chinese (bu-hua) textbooks, teach you bu-hua lessons vocab content as well, over and above teaching you gao-hua lessons content as well ???

To share,
over at St Nick,
we Lower Secondary gao-hua students,
did not buy any bu-hua textbook, hence never attended any bu-hua lesson at all,

because

when school bell \"ding, ding, ding\", bell ring for Chinese lessons, students split.

- pupils who are taking HCL, attend gao-hua lessons, while

- pupils taking Standard Chinese, attend bu-bua lessons.

Instead,
we, HCL students, were told to purchase only gao-hua textbooks in Sec 1 and thus, attended only gao-hua lessons. As such, over a period of time, we have missed out learning a lot of bu-hua Chinese vocab, because not been taught, unless on our own initiative, we self-study bu-hua textbooks as well. This is our concern,

because
don't forget one very important fact-

when HCL students take the common O-level (HCL) National exam paper at the end of Year 4, from whichever Secondary school
you come from, under test vocab section, SEAB can test you anything under the sun !

When mention \"anything under the sun\", for O-level (HCL) exam
it means that vocab testing of ci yu, can cone from several sources

- can come from the 96 chapters of gao-hua Textbook (1A to 4B) content, or

- can come from the 96 chapters of bu-hua Textbook (1A to 4B) content, or

- can come from \"ke-wai\", means external, nothing to do with Textbook content whatsoever.

\"Bu-hua\" textbooks content,
by itself,

- for Year 1 : Total 24 chapters, from bu-hua Sec textbooks (1A and 1B)

- for Year 2 : the same.
Total, another 24 chapters, from bu-hua Sec textbooks (2A and 2B)

- for Year 3 : same
Total, another 24 chapters, from
bu-hua textbooks (3A and 3B)

- for Year 4 : same
Total, another 24 chapters, from bu-hua textbooks (4A and 4B).

In other words,
within 4 years time-frame,
Total, bu-hua Textbook content already covered

(24 chapters x 4 years),
equal to Total 96 chapters.
(close to 100 chapters)
That's a lot, a lot missing !!!

And the bu-hua vocab content
Is entirely different,

from another different 96 chapters of gao-hua textbook content !

==========================

However,
in sharp contrast,
in St Nick primary school section , for students who are taking PSLE HCL,
In Upper primary (P5 and P6),
St Nick primary do teach both bu-hua and gao-hu textbooks content.

That is why, in primary school, HCL is a mere extension of P6 Standard Chinese.

Hi phtthp

My daughter (Sec 2 IP) is reading HCL and she has not been asked to buy Chinese textbooks, only the HCL textbooks. The SCGS booklists are all available online 🙂

Within each IP class, there are both HCL and CL students, as well as students who read other MTs. SCGS is a racially diverse school. Still, among the IP classes, at lower Sec, more read HCL than CL. Some will drop HCL after Sec 2.
