As to your question about the teacher in charge of canoeing, I actually heard it from other Sec 1 parents! So Sec 1 is no honeymoon for the canoeing boys!

I heard there is going to be a competition in Macau in June, not sure if your boy is involved.

The teacher in charge is a Mr. Yong Yuen Cheng, he teaches Physics in iSpark Consortium.

If you remember in February this year, there was a \"Run Round Singapore - Going the Distance\" 218km mega relay run to celebrate NTU's 55th annivesary and raise funds for needy students, he was one of the runners, he completed the 218km run in 31 hours and 28 mins! That's like running 5 continous marathons!

So he pushes the canoe boys VERY HARD!!!

Tks Tetsujin. My boy is in Ortus. So far no complaints fm him regarding his tough canoeing training. Seeing the time & effort spent in his training, I did ask him if he ever regret taking up canoeing, he juz smile at me & say 'dun know leh'. My guess is he is enjoying it but when the training gets too tough, he feels the stress lah...Imagine juz 2 mths of training & the sec 1s went for a competition last mth....its a gd experience though. Mayb another compeition end of this mth. Btw, how did u know a lot of boys r complaining the teacher ic is pushing them too hard? R they the Sec 2s-4s. Sec 1 still honeymoon yr. Tink more stress will come next yr when they r expected to participate in more competitions, 4 trainings per wk...

Oh i did not find ways for my boy to recharge, he automatically does that himself, tink tat's the only area he has most initiative in....haha....So I usually do not stop him from playing his games even though there r piles of work not done & test coming up as long as he hands up all his wk in time & prepare for his tests. Guess he will perform better after the recharge. Anyway, he's a happy-go-lucky boy who has no complains. Tink seeing him with the heavy school work & activities, I feel more stress than him...haha. Occasionally, I will ask him if he feels stress juz to make sure he is alright.

So yr boy is in HCI JC1 this yr? So far do u find the 4 yrs in the high school a bonus to him in adapting to the JC life & school workload? What was his CCA in high school time?

In the years gone by, the canoeists in NJC trains 4 days a week till 7pm daily until the competition is over. They merely attended the lectures and tutorials and the real catch up was when the end of year exam is coming - if they fail, they would be retained in JC1 .....those were the days before NJC becomes IP....and the training for both the canoeing and dragon boat teams are very tough - but they learn what is discipline

Yes, I knew it is Mr. Yong when u mentioned he was fm NJC but didn't know that he coach HCI canoeing team only this yr. I read abt his achievement in the NTU run & my boy also participated in the 3km relay. The Macau competition is not open for Sec 1s. I understand fm my boy that there r some Sec 1s who 'volunteered' to train more than 2x a week, those who r super keen on participating in competition. Tink Mr. Yong only trains those participating in the major competitions. My boy ever mentioned Mr. Yong doesn't train the Sec 1s. There r 2 other teachers/coaches, Mr. Lim & Mr. Ng who r more involve with the Sec 1s. Tough or not, I'm glad my boy has picked up a new skill & I hope he'll continue to enjoy it.

the principal assured the parents it is not so

but in real life, when you mingle with the students and teachers, it is just a bit more \"chinese\" than other schools

I think the school is trying hard to stay \"Chinese\" like the old days . Caused nowadays the boys are so \"Ang Mo\". Son's CL teacher has hard time making them speak mandarin, so they practiced a lot of oral Presentation in class but son said they always end up laughing so badly caused 3/4 of the boys either cant pronounced the words or expressed the passage properly. Hopefully son will be more \"Chinese\" by Year 2 😉

The school is just trying to keep some of the important Chinese traditions like charcter building and filial piety.

I terms of teachings, the school is no different from other schools.
