      Hi

would like to know if HCI is still a very \"Chinese\" school. during my time, it was so but after so many years, i am not sure whether it is still like in the olden days....
      tks
the principal assured the parents it is not so

but in real life, when you mingle with the students and teachers, it is just a bit more \"chinese\" than other schools

I think the school is trying hard to stay \"Chinese\" like the old days . Caused nowadays the boys are so \"Ang Mo\". Son's CL teacher has hard time making them speak mandarin, so they practiced a lot of oral Presentation in class but son said they always end up laughing so badly caused 3/4 of the boys either cant pronounced the words or expressed the passage properly. Hopefully son will be more \"Chinese\" by Year 2 πŸ˜‰

The school is just trying to keep some of the important Chinese traditions like charcter building and filial piety.

I terms of teachings, the school is no different from other schools.

                Hi

I heard that there was a bi-culture camp recent yrs at Hwa Chong. It is connected with DSA. I heard that if your kid was choosen among the children in the camp, your kid will be invited to join Hwa Chong’s DSA. Is it real? Any ideas? Thanks.

                    Hi

I heard that HC holding a two-day one-night bi-culture camp, (this year 25 and 26 June) at its boarding school. About 40 P5 students were selected to join. Most of them are from GEP. After the camp, they will select about ten of them to join DSA next year. Since it is a bi-culture camp, it means that they should be bilingual (of course they are best in Chin and Eng). Those selected students do not need to sit for the Chin and Eng test in the DSA. They are just asked to sit on the GA paper, Maths and have an interview.

                    Any other information?

                    Meimei

                      Your info is correct. however,

                      1. not true that most of them are from GEP (from some SAP school, only mainstream students are selected because GEP is already a pre-qualification for some DSA, so GEP students have no chance, fair right ?)

                      2. this is the second year HCI doing it (first time was in Nov 09)

                      3. HCI is trying out this with a few SAP schools only as they are stronger in CL. This DSA route is a response to MOE's call for more bicultural expert (read : not just good in EL/CL - must be good in Math & Sci too)

                      4. HCI still monitors the overall results of the kids - and they must continue to show consistent performance. They do not want parents and students to drop momentum once they are shortlisted as the final 10

                      5. they camp is not easy (only 10 are selected from 40+, based on your info)

Possible scenario : exempt from EL / CL DSA test based on above qualification as bicultural camp winners, and ALSO exempt from Math test if SMOPS Platinum / Gold holders.......(better still for NYGH aspirants : exempt from GAT too - only need to go for interview)
