Hi, for the new PSLE grading system, there isn’t any advantage of HCL, is it? Can’t add any points like the old system, jus considered priority for SAP schools only?? Thanks!
If my child is not scoring well in his 4 core subjects, I would drop HCL to focus on the 4 core subjects under AL system.

Particularly, work on pulling up the weakest subjects first. HCL is only worth doing if he’s already scoring AL1 in all 4 core subjects.

As far as I am aware, the +3, +2, +1 only applies for SAP schools now as well. I.e. 2019 PSLE scored 258 + 3 means can go NYGH, cannot go RGS.

So I believe it is similar under the new system. Distinction, Merit, Pass is first tiebreaker within an AL level for SAP schools. For other schools, it has no direct impact.

No it is not similar under the new system.

The only similarity is the advantage (old and new) applies for SAP secondary schools only.

The big difference is, under the new system, scoring well for HCL does not add points to “leapfrog“ over someone without HCL. Example, a raw 7 pointer without HCL will still get into the SAP school before any 8 pointers (pass/merit/distinction) can get in.

Note that even if never take HCL at P6, still can enter SAP schools and take HCL in Sec 1 if meet MOE’s overall criteria (which has been relaxed slightly).

Whereas under old system, a raw 258+3 is counted as 261, will get to leapfrog over a raw 260 who did not take HCL.[/quote]Sorry, I understand all of the differences you are describing. I may have misread the original question a bit, as I was focused on the SAP only preference. Apologies to all if more confusion was added.

My child is in a class where majority are taking hcl as part of lessons, she doesn’t need to move ard for Chinese lessons. And we are hoping that hcl gives her more exposure to Chinese to help her improve her CL. On that basis, we don’t mind for her to keep HCL even though she is not scoring well in hcl. Yet to know if sch let her keep hcl for P6, depending on her CL results in SA2.

Her CL is between AL 3 or 2. Other subjects are not AL1 too

Interesting. I've never thought of it this way, although it is (partly) true. You would always rather have a better (i.e. lower) AL level vs. having any of Distinction/Merit/Pass for HCL in the next higher AL level.

My uncertainty with this strategy is that I'm not sure cutting HCL and only focusing on the main 4 subjects will guarantee that the kid ends up in a better AL (again, probably depends on the starting point for each individual student). And given how wide (# of students) some of these AL bands may be, the tie breaker could be quite important if targeting a SAP school.

I think the biggest thing is that HCL is not a necessity, and if it is going to consume a disproportionate amount of time then it probably isn't worth it. But I'm not sure it is only a detractor either, particularly for those that are doing OK in CL.

Same here, our strategy is not to spend extra time in preparing for hcl, except for sch homework and prepare that the score is low. Focus is on CL.

Agree with you, SGkP1. The extra time gained from not taking hcl would not make too much difference in other subjects for my kids case.

So for SAP school, I think HCL will become an advantage over those who dont. (This is my guess).

For students who are able to score AL1 for CL, I am sure they should be able to handle HCL without much problem.

                      Hi,

Can anyone advise if a drop of marks from 90.plus to 70 plus is normal?

                      My boy results
                      El -81/100
                      Maths-78/100
                      Science-76/100

I kept reading its suppose to drop and its normal but I saw and heard some kids are.able to score 90 plus for their latest p5 sa2 and am wondering if 20 marks drop is really normal after all…

Also, any kind parents can recommend any good writing class for English?
Any comments on Wow and Tas?

                      Please advise
                      …
