All About A Levels

since son has poly qualifications, it’s really pointless to go backwards to take A levels.
furthermore with uncertainty of NS book out, guard duty and lab work…it doesn’t quite make sense.
he took pure bio in secondary school and bio medical in poly. medicine is a competitive course. will see how it goes when he is done with NS in 2022. -

I think it is extremely hard to cram 2 years worth of 3 H2 + 1H1 + GP knowledge into 1 year study. Some more if it is self study and never study the subjects before. And, I heard need to get at least RP 87.5 to be granted an interview for medicine.
Why not try applying for NUS medicine and NTU medicine with current poly diploma first? I don’t know whether NTU needs BMAT for poly graduates or not.
Or, wait until he graduates then apply to Duke-NUS Medicine.
Or, apply to SMU-Duke-NUS Medicine pathway or SUTD-Duke-NUS Medicine special track or Yale-NUS-Duke-NUS Medicine pathway. -

Pre-Covid, Australia universities used to be very popular among our Poly grads, because they could save one year of studies.

Eg. from SP diploma in Biochem, only need top up 1 year of studies in a tier 1 Aussie Uni to get a Bachelors in Biochem (no honors year). Whereas NUS made them do 2 years to get the same qualification.
Similarly, less onerous/competitive to get into Medicine course in Sydney University compared to NUS Medicine. Both equally recognized in SG. There are also those who are willing to enter non-recognized universities just to get the medical degree, provided they are not interested to practice in Singapore.
But I guess now parents are thinking twice about overseas education. -
Speaking of which, I wonder if there is going to be a permanent downward shift in the number of SIngaporean students heading overseas annually to the US/UK/Aussie for university studies. And if so, would it mean that competition to get into local AUs will increase? I can imagine for those who can afford it, they won’t want to pay so much to get a ‘shortchanged’ overseas experience as there is the fear of Covid or Disease X popping up in the future necessitating online classes. And for those who are unable to make to local universities, they may think twice about going overseas but instead choose to pursue the various work study pathways / SkillsFuture pathways in Singapore.

I called up NUS school of medicine as he isn't convenient to do so.

The lady advised me over the phone to ask son to try both Duke-NUS medicine as well as NUS Yong Loo Lin medicine as this course is very competitive.
For engineering undergrad, there is also an Engineering and Medicine track. if successful, he will get BEng from NUS followed by Doctor of Medicine degree at Duke-NUS medical school. -
