Not to pour any cold water, but I seriously do not think tuition is necessary for languages. It may just add to their stress, considering their compulsory maths and science tuition, piano and swimming lessons, and what not.

Reading, listening to selected music stations, watching some TV serials, wouldn't that be better?

But just my take though.

Yes you r right titank. It the class size is a factor. Other factors are whether you are looking for moe teachers , other qualifications and experience. This site give alittle more details on how tuition rates are fixed.

It really depends on the strength of the child. Mine do not need tuition for Eng, maths and science, but Chinese is \"compulsory\" since I am not competent and we speak English at home almost all the time, never watch TV serials...

No offence, but that's my take on this matter. 😄

Note that not all tuition teachers are good. I actually employed a Chinese tuition teacher for my girl when she was about 3 years old. That teacher did not know how to teach. I got to go and find materials for the teacher to use. I stopped the lessons after a few weeks. When my girl was 4 years old, I sent her to Berries which is very good.

I think if you get a tuition teacher, it is not much use if all she can do is to revise the school textbook. The primary school textbook is very bad in my opinion. It is best that parents do research and find good resources for the teacher.

Here is the best resource that I have found :
              http://tamarindvillage.blogspot.com/2009/12/teaching-chinese-at-home.html

It is suitable for P1 and P2 kids who are weak in Chinese. Parents who are weak in Chinese and pass these books to the tuition teacher to use 😉 The books are out of stock now but should be back in stock soon.

Original Title: Market rate for private tutor

                Hello Everyone

I met a private tutor for my p5 girl who offered an intensive 1 to 1 coaching for 3 months (math & science total 48hrs). The rate quoted was $180 per hour. Upon completion of this 3 months intensive coaching she will join the group at $80 per hr. Is this the normal going rate for private tuition?

FYI my girl is an average girl but fared badly this year in CA1 & SA1.

Appreciate your comments and welcome any recommendation for tutors/enrichment classes.

                Thanks.

Yes, I feel this is too expensive. The tutors that I have hired so far are charging around $35-$40 per hour and they are alrdy so professional & experienced. U don need to pay $80 per hour to produce the same results.

Is it inflation? During my time, this kind of heavenly price only charged by very good tutors for A levels…definitely not primary.
