Pardon me, but i think this is daylight robbery! Even school teachers are charging around $40 per hour, and it is a 1-1 tuition.

hmm i did came across this rates b4. i was quoted $200 per hr by a ntu first class honors tutor. i seriously do not think its necessary to go to such extend. i jus put my child at ignite tuition centre and its like $20 bucks per lesson and its doin fine with visible improvements i’m satisfied already.

Actually, it does not mean that if a tutor is first class honour/with scholorship will definitely be able to teach effectively. That goes the same as with NIE education. A lot of people think that ex NIE means very good, but it really depends. Of cos if given the same calibre, with NIE training definitely equips one to teach better but I do heard of some who cant make it even though they have been NIE trained b4.

I do know that there are many tutors out in the market who are not NIE trained but is charging high rates such as $50 - $100 per hour but are getting tonnes of students due to their experience.

So, qualification does gives the passport of entry but how long one can sustains with such high rates still boils down to his experience & effectiveness.

              Hello Everyone

I met a private tutor for my p5 girl who offered an intensive 1 to 1 coaching for 3 months (math & science total 48hrs). The rate quoted was $180 per hour. Upon completion of this 3 months intensive coaching she will join the group at $80 per hr. Is this the normal going rate for private tuition?

FYI my girl is an average girl but fared badly this year in CA1 & SA1.

Appreciate your comments and welcome any recommendation for tutors/enrichment classes.

              Thanks.
the tutor got $8000++ in a month for just teaching your child *faint*

I'm going to a group tuition in Buangkok and my parents pay $380 a month for four classes. The one-to-one tuition in my tuition centre is around $360.Each lesson is 1.5h. One hour for $180...thats really too expensive. My friend failed her science in p5, went to group tuition and three months later, scored a high B/low A(I forgot) for SA2.
The group tuition is also quite ex.
                    I think you've been conned.

Hmm in this tuition industry where there are imperfect information parents can get an idea of the market rate (shaped quite a bit by demand and supply) by checking out the websites of tuition agencies like temasek tutors. That’s what I did so that I know how to charge.

when you see moe teachers charging only $40/h for primary school and someone came along and quote an outlier price, something is wrong.
Sure a bit of fluctuation is expected given qualification, experience, track record and location.
